Hey guys I was just wondering what you guys do to pick a school especially those who have below average stats. I've had a huge upward trend over the past three years. Prior to that my gpa was a 1.25 it is currently a 3.2cgpa and about 3.44 sgpa and this is for D.O schools since they do grade replacement It has helped a lot. My gpa got to the low of 1.25 due to a change of plan for my education ( I decided to become a Paramedic ) once I made that decision I decided I no longer needed my current courses and left 1 month into the term. Me being 19 and dumb I did not formally withdraw I just stopped attending and that series of F's screwed my gpa. I repeated those courses and got A's but because AMCAS averages instead of replaces I am about a 2.9. I am taking the MCAT on July 12 which I know will pay a major part into my competitiveness. I currently work as a paramedic along with teaching paramedicine and act as a Clinical Preceptor for my University. I plan on applying this upcoming cycle assuming I don't bomb the MCAT and I was looking to get a List started as I am busy with School, Work, Writing Personal Statement, Studying for MCAT and just general life I don't want to wait until the last minute especially if I do well on the MCAT. I am also an African American male from a lower socioeconomic background so from what I hear that will play some part into the situation. I have absolutely no issue attending a D.O. School my desire is to become a physician and practice medicine not to gloat about the letters that follow my name. The only reason I am asking about the MD route is because of the fact that there are more residency and fellowship opportunities through the allopathic route. Sorry it was so long winded to get to my question but I'm just wondering if anybody has any suggestions about MD schools to apply to. Or these who favor Non Trad students who turned their situation around. Any input is appreciated thanks.

Looks like you fine for any DO program, including mine. Upward trends are a good thing.

Being URM will help, but you'll still need to do well on MCAT. After all, no med school would be doing you a favor if you can't handle the curriculum. But, rising trends are always good, and people like come-from-behind stories.

Good time mgt is a crucial for success in medical school. I assume you're applying in June 2015? If this year, taking the MCAT in July might make your app too late for MD programs, despite it being good. Keep in mind that the DO app cycle is longer than that for MD.

The HBCs will be obvious starters. And there are schools that reward reinvention: Tulane, NYMC, Albany, Tufts, Drexel, and I'll bet the newest programs will also cut you some slack.
