Hey guys i posted something on my plan for HS but was moved to hsdn
So I got a question. There is a college nearby that offers a bachelors degree in biology. The name is miami dade college. It was a a long time ago a cc but they changed the name . Should I go to save money for med school. Or should I go to fiu fsu or um.

If they are accredited and give bachelors degrees, it doesnt really matter where you go.

If you're plan is med school, going to the undergrad with the best reputation for sending graduates to medical school, is generally the best decision.

As a Florida resident you have a number of great public universities that won't be too expensive and will still prepare you very well for medical school. Definitely look at UF, FSU, UCF, USF, etc. All of these schools have associated med schools as well, so you can potentially get involved in research and volunteering, etc.

Don't go to community college. Miami dade is still a cc (even though it offers a few bachelor degrees) and not considered a part of state university system of Florida. FIU and FSU are both good options and Florida state universities are among the most affordable in the nation. UM undergrad is more costly than their med school. Basically it all comes down to whether you want to live in Miami or Tallahassee, which to me is a simple choice considering how cold this winter's been 😉

: )

For cost effectiveness, miami dade is a unique option. Typically to save costs, people do their first years at a CC then transfer. At Miami Dade (being a pseudo uni), you can get the whole shebang for half the cost. Although, you have to consider that other institutions provide better financial aid. Cost may be more comparable with Dade than you think. Of course, if you're living with your parents and would prefer to stay near the area to mitigate living costs, than Dade it is.

Certainly there are opportunities at FIU and UM that you won't find at Dade.... For instance, Dade is sort of dry on research opportunities. You can always conduct research at other institutions, but it's harder to get from what I hear if you're not matriculated to their university.

As an aside, Dade is really into that whole peer-led learning crud from what I hear :bored:.

UM is an excellent school for pre-meds if you can afford it. Even if you think you can't, you should apply and see what financial aid they will give you. As a private school, they are generous with grants.
