Hey guys,
I'm a 4th year pre-dent student, my GPA is 3.71 (3.67 science). I have a decent resume with a bit of research/officer positions in pre-med club. I will probably have average/below avg LORs 😱 , and will probably spend a huge chunk of next year shadowing or trying to get work in a dental office.

Everyone else's stats look pretty amazing compared to mine, so i was wondering what you guys think my chances are of getting into dental school (like NYU/Tufts/Case/Anywhere else within the US) if i were to hit ~21AA/21PAT on my DATs?

let me be the first to congratulate you on your hard work!!! 3.71 is a GREAT gpa!

if you do well on the DAT (19+) you will be very competitive at the schools you mentioned as well as many many more.

good luck!

ps. SND represents only a fraction of the applicant pool. many here are "go getters" (and smart) so their stats are super competitive. some embellish their scores since this is anonymous (hopefully not many). so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm just kind of worried about how important shadowing dentists/good LORs are. I've held 3 officer positions (pres for one) in the pre-med club + honor society, and my grades are decent, but does anyone know what i should do about shadowing dentists? (i have zero hours shadowing dentists as of now) I plan on putting in 100+ hours over this summer, but it will probably be too late to get LORs from them, or put it on my application. since i'm a late applicant (end of my 4th year now, i'm taking a year off), i just want to be able to get into any dental school.

Unless you walked up to your professors and told them to go F* themselves, what makes you think you'll get such poor LORs? Your stats are pretty good and you should be able to get into a few dental schools.

i started to shadow a general dentist at the end of july and had plenty of time to get a great LOR. i applied in september (kinda late).

you have PLENTY of time. go to your dentist or your family dentist or if there is a dental school near you, find a dentist there, and ask if you can shadow. most are very receptive to shadowing students. after several weeks or a month ask for a LOR, then send it in to AADSAS (or directly to the schools).

You do not need the LOR to get your application going at AADSAS, just the application (online) and all your transcripts. It will take AADSAS 1-2 months to send off your file to dent schools. by then you will be BBF with the dentist and have a great LOR. Make sure to look interested, ask questions, help out, and NEVER yawn while you shadow - and you should be in great shape.

good luck.

if the prof's don't have beef with you, chances are, they are gonna write positive recommendation letters for you. If you sleep in class and don't hand in homeworks, and the professor notices it, then you might be in trouble. Otherwise, you don't have to worry about it.
