PLS read , what about LORs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yeah, I think she is one of those people who tried to go to med school and she could not, u have no idea how much I worked late in night to be able to pay for MD school application,

wow... I'm so sorry to hear that... keep fighting on and just replace her letter... great work though!!! keep it up

omg thats horrible, this is one of my biggest fears come to life....i always wonder if a teacher will do this to me as you never know. What a ****ing bitch i feel for you...Hopefully u can just replace the letter and get in. Good luck🙁

That's pretty screwed up. I'll never understand why a professor would write a bad letter. Why not just refuse to write the letter instead? However, I wouldn't have asked her to write the letter if she told me I wasn't cut out to be a doctor.
Sorry that happened to you, but don't let it sour your attitude too much.

Holy crap! So sorry to hear.

Is there any way to read a letter before someone sends it in?

sadly there is not. Though some profs are really chill and let you read it anyways though technically you are not supposed to. most schools make you sign some confidentiality form so that you cant read them, or places like interfolio wont allow u to read it.

yeah, I have not read any of my letters, I read that one b/c she told me I am not good for MD school, dont worry I think she is sick psycho ,

So sorry, OP, I feel for you.
This is my big fear as well.:scared:

My LOr, u ask me why, a month ago one of my loR writers told me she thinks that I will never be accepted in med school, I was kind of shock, who think she is !! so I asked her to write me a reference for Msc, she gave me the envelop for MSc in biology , she told me this letter is the exact letter for my last year MD , obviously I would never open it, but I open it before posting it, and I was shocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

😕

Am I the only one confused as to what the OP was trying to say here?

So you asked for a LOR from a writer who told you up front that she doesn't think you'll be accepted? And you "obviously would never open" the letter but then "open[ed] it"?

😕

no dude, she told me that a year after she wrote me that letter, I told her I did not accept it in 2009 cycle and she was kind of knew she told me that I am not good enough, then she told me it is better to try for MSc biology, so I asked her for reference but then I decided to open the letter, since she told me this was the same letter as last year!
I know it was wrong to open the letter but I was shocked by wut she said about med school !

She was really bitter over something. May be her son/husband/sister/mother/father/herself was/were rejected multiple times from med school. So she takes revenge by doing this w/ poor pre-meds. she is wicked.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but your PS could've lead to your rejections. Your grammar seems mechanically skewed and your use of some verbs isn't exactly correct. But I do realize that the professor was an uneducated, immoral, stupid bitch. I'm sorry abt the rejections, hopefully, this time around you'll be able to find better letter of recomendations. Why not try immingrant professors (if you have any) for your LOR's? They would understand your difficulties and will hopefully provide better letters.

i wouldnt base someones grammer skills off a random post on the internet, who the hell writes like they would on a forum in their PS. Its just the internet who cares if u write correctly...

Messed up. This is why I'm a fan of rigging things or finding a way so you can read your letters. It's hundreds of thousands of dollars that's lost for each year you aren't in med school, not to mention anything of the emotional toll. I think it's only fair for applicants to know what goes in their applications.

FWIW, the waivers we sign differ in the fine print. Typically, however, the waivers just release your right to request letters from your future med school. I've never seen a waiver that says I may never read the letters under any circumstance.

Right. I imagine that for a PS, the OP made sure she/he accounted for her/his weakness in English. An 11 on verbal is fine, too. It should've relieved the concerns any adcoms might have had.

The waivers dont mean much anyways i mean ive read 3/4 of my LORs. Btw i dont think ive ever mentioned it but i love your avatar lol

You should ask them if they feel comfortable writing you a good letter first. If not, then find someone else. But do work on your grammar, a lot of us here are immigrants and still write posts with proper spelling and grammar for the benefit of other readers.

The OP still beat >90% of med school applicants in the verbal section. FWIW, the OP also said that he/she did ask if the writer could provide a good letter but was misled.

Many immigrants can write well, but they tend to have arrived when they were younger than the OP or had better schooling in their native countries or came from countries with a more similar language.

I miss my avatar. I got her for my GF when we were in college and after we graduated, she took the cat with her. I only get to see Koko once every two months 🙁

dude I just cry today, sorry my English is not that bad, I teach TOEFL😀, I just can not think anymore, oh and my English prof checked my PS don't worry

While it's crappy that this happened to you, consider yourself lucky because you know what killed your application. Some of us (read: me) have no idea what went wrong last time so we have to be paranoid about everything.

I remember someone on here saying that they sent their own LOR's to someone they new and then read them, anyone know how that went?

If anyone knows about this please let me know or PM me.

We all work very hard to be where we are at, I dont think anyone should even think about doing what that woman did to you. Not only do I think you should confront her I think you should let the head of her department know what she did, so that people can know what kind of person she is. Isnt it illegal to negatively write about someones character? I remember reading that on this forum once.

Wow that woman...and you got an A+?? 😕

Didn't you have another LOR that probably said great things? I'm just confused b/c your stats seem really good and you probably got interviews. I'm just wondering if one LOR can really do that to you when you have other LOR's and a PS to back it up. I'm very curious. Oh and that professor is probably going to hell.

wow.... there has got to be something to this story you are leaving out.

I cannot see anyone out there, (or rather would want to imagine), someone being able to say to your face that they would be willing to write you a good letter of recommendation and then turn around sucker punch you with a mean and nasty one, and to top it off, boast about herself in the letter of the recommendation. This makes no sense, either you were poor at selecting your potential LORs or that professor is a maniac. I just can't believe it, nor do I want to believe it.

What are you not telling us?

Thank you. Something about OP's posts have been bothering me as well, and you hit the nail right on the head.

What are you not telling us?

1- she is unorganized
2- her English is poor compare to other students ( I got 11 in MCAt verbal and I was not born like u in America I have accent)
3- she is not a natural leader
4-she is not mature enough
5- she used deferred 1 time ( my mom was sick, bitch!!!!!!!)

With the common SDN mantra of applying early, having everything ready to go on time, churning out secondaries in one day etc., "1" could have played a significant factor.

As for 4, I think that's clearly evident based on the my bolded segment of 5.

sure it explains her flaws and may have been a great facter to why she didn't get in anywhere, but this does not explain or justify the professor's ungodly behavior.

I am telling truth, she wrote I lack organization skills, I am not natural leader and also I ask for deferred exam, I just deleted my post since I felt really bad by some of the post, i dont care wut u say I wanted to let all pre med know that know their LOr writers before asking them to write, I dont care if u wanna believe it or not, I am 28 years old, I was med student in my country wrote MCAt 5 times, maybe I am not perfect like the typical American pre meds with great accent and great writing but I think I am going to be a good doc,

and about mature thing, dude , my mom was in hospital for a week, she knew my situation but why she had to write it on LOR, she deserve to be called bitch,

I know this is just a public forum and all, and I know you must be feeling like crap. But please make an effort to use proper grammar, it makes your posts more credible.

this has little to do with any of this but I've read enough papers from immigrants, [I'm an immigrant myself] that I can almost put my finger on what nationality you are by making note of the typical grammatical errors. I am going to go out on a limb and say you are from south east asia and your country name starts with a V.

Anyway, I did not allure to any deceit in your story, EXCEPT for the fact that you might be with-holding some vital details that would explain why a professor would want to sabotage your whole career plans.

dude I am sorry I am really bad in English I deserve to go to ESL or grade 1, just leave me alone no one ask u to make a comment! just get the message , u don't need to talk about my english all the time, as an immigrant people tellu this all the time,

no u are wrong I am from IRAN, people live with their own misconception, and dont call urself immigrant if u acme here when u were 2 years old,

okay...

I saw this happen to a friend of mine when she applied for a position as an orientation leader and I was the orientation intern reviewing the applications. I did not reveal the contents of the letter to her, but informed her not to ask for an LOR from her in the future... Unfortunately, she is the prof that composes the premed committee letters.

haha was he having a convo w/ himself? Anyway I can't ever imagine a professor doing that to me. Were you close with her socially as in like small talk outside of class? The professors I am close with are people I would actually hang out w/ outside of class. That could've been a factor on top of the other stuff ppl said above. I hope you didn't cram the rec into her face a day b/f it was due, that could've been it. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt 🙂 gl

It's illegal to falsely write about someone's character, particularly if that false information is negative. But, if it's all true, it's not illegal.
