I had a few questions about PM&R.
First off, would it be harder to get into a PM&R residency if someone was a DO instead of an MD? I checked the PM&R's in my area, and they're all MD's.
Also, how competitive is it to get into a PM&R residency. I've read other threads and they all say it's getting more and more competitive. I'm just afraid of getting into this and finding out later on that you need to be top 10% of your class. I'm interested in Physical Therapy right now too, so I'm just considering the options.
Also, it may sound stupid, but how does the process of being a PM&R? I don't know much about medical school, after medical school. It's 4 years of school, then what?
Sorry about all the questions, but a short answer will do.
Thanks

DO vs. MD has been done to death. Suffice it to say PM&R is DO friendly.

Competition is relative. Compared to years past, more med students are aware of PM&R and we are getting a larger, better qualified pool of applicants. But compared to other specialties (say Derm, rads) PM&R is nowhere near as competitive. Not even close. You don’t have to be in the top 10% in your class to go into PM&R, but don’t expect to slack off and land a choice residency either. Top programs are competitive no matter what the specialty.

PM&R is a four year residency after medical school. Usually a preliminary year in internal medicine (internship) followed by three years in PM&R. Some choose to go directly into practice afterwards, some choose to pursue a 1-2 year fellowship.

You have a long road ahead of you. Pace yourself.
