Which is better for treating chronic back pain and why?

I suppose at one time or another every physician evaluating a patient with chronic back pain has wanted to do a MAC with Versed and Propofol and then just quietly slip out of the examination room...but how this would actually make the patient better after the drugs burned off is beyond me.
