Hi, I'm a med student and I want to buy a pocket dictionary: any suggestions? pls specify the exact name. thanks in advance.

I got Stedman's Medical Dictionary for free when I signed up for the AMA...not pocket-sized, but handy enough that I carried it around during the first two years of med school.

Early on during third year rotations, when I was still unfamiliar with many terms, I used something for my PDA. I think it was the Skyscape version of Stedman's. Dorland's is the other big name in medical dictionaries.

By fourth year, unfamiliar words were popping up infrequently enough that I could just write it down and look it up later.

Get a Medical Student's Pocket Reference by Ken Bookstein. It is not exactly a dictionary, but it has a LOT of info for its size by way of tiny print, thin pages and abbrev.

I got the cheapest one I could find, but I hardly use it. Google/wikipedia ftw 😛

I have a Stedman's from joining AMA. I haven't really used it that much. It's sitting in my locker but I rarely go and use it. The internet is great. And my school offers Stedman's online too. So it's really not that necessary.

I've heard good things about Pocket Reference but most of the upperclassmen say it wouldn't be that helpful first two years but to definitely get it when you start rotations.
