I'm worried that if I would go into pod school and eventually became a podiatrist how will you pay for student loans due to the low income of a podiatrist? It's not low for an average person but it is low for the amount of debt you'll have and I'm just wondering would there be any specialty that could get you up with good income and help pay off the big debt?

Well research I've done and by low I mean $125k - $175k

how much do you think the primary care/internal medicine guys are making?

Can't I just get straight answer not answers off subject

125-175k salary should be enough to pay off loans unless you are stupid with your money

Too many factors come into play when asking such a question. Location, private practice, hospital setting, credentials, overall capabilities of the practitioner...etc. You will be able to pay off your loans. These loan providers can give you ample amount of time, and are flexible with payments (pay off loans in ~10 years, ~25 years, I've yet to meet a Pod complain about paying off loans).

But based off your posts in this thread, I would assume you're doing this for the money, and I hope my assumption is wrong.

If this forum was based off Iran, I would say this 👍 to you friend.

Good luck with all your endeavors. :luck:

Oh trust me its mot for money I am very interested in this field I just wanted to get all fears out the way and just go for it, which I am now

As with all walks of life I think someone should take the time to devise a business plan before starting any venture. If cooking was my passion and I wanted to start my own restaurant, I should first develop a business plan before I open a restaurant or I will be spending less time doing what I love (cooking) and more time on the phone with collection agencies asking for money I do not have. The same theory can be applied to medicine. So in that light, yes OP, I think you are well with in your right to ask this question.

Honestly, I am still trying to figure this out myself. It seems most schools will cost $200,000-240,000 total. The cap on financial aid is $247,000 @ 6.8%.

You can no longer defer your loans - applies to any graduate school training.
(side note I hear this new rule will now be extended to undergraduates soon)

I believe there is an income based loan repayment (you are not forced to pay more than 15% of your income, this is calculated before taxes). If you serve in an under represented area or public sector there is a 10 year loan program, but I hear that after the 10 years your debt is "forgiven" BUT what actually happens is the government cuts a check for what you owe (lets say 200,000) and you are TAXED on that $200,000 as if it were an income. So you are still liable to the IRS for 30+% of your debt.

I could go on and on but I hope this might help and that this information will foster further discussion...

You can always look into getting the scholarship with the NAVY, where they pay off all your debt as long as you sign a contract agreeing to work for them for several years. Pod school is cheaper than MD school, and they average more than fam/primary docs.
