This is for all the 4th years and residents and attending:

scenario:

a new pt comes in with an infected foot ulcer. you ask the pt if he is diabetic and he tells you that he does not know. Would a pod be allowed to order the appropriate lab tests to detect the diabetes and ultimately diagnose it? Of course after the diagnosis im sure a referral to a pcp for the management of the disease would be needed.

Is my thinking correct?

Yes. As stated numerous times in numerous posts, those that don't understand podiatry must simply start thinking of it as ANY other medical specialty. DPMs can order any tests that are appropriate including, but not limited to blood/lab tests, x-rays, MRI's, ultrasounds, CT scans, bone scans, EMG/NCV's, perform surgical procedures of all imaginable types of the foot/ankle, perform injections, prescribe any necessary medications that are indicated, etc., etc., etc.

DPMs are doctors, not technicians, assistants, etc., and can perform or order any test, procedure, etc., that is needed/required for the care of the patient.
