So I've discovered there are a lot of mormons here and also all the new dentists in my area are mormons so I thought I'd try to get a headcount of how many mormons there are on the forum.
I am curious to know how many went to BYU or to an university in Utah. I am surprised that BYU doesn't have its own medical or dental school.
And if you listen to the rumors close enough, we are taking over the field of dentistry. So if you're not Mormon don't even bother applying... unless you have a 4.0, 26+ on the DAT and have at least read the Book of Mormon.

Many successful US professionals are also members of the worlds youngest major religion...

I too have heard about the Mormon's high success rate. Not just for dental school, but for specializing as well. I guess getting married younger and following their faith devoutly (ie. not drinking, no caffeine, living saintly, etc) really helps with staying focused and inspired through school.
Maybe I should convert.... lol
Just curious. Are mormons mostly vegetarians?
I was a born mormon technically, but I consider myself agnostic as of today. I clicked no.
I too have noticed this trend. I have several friends that are LDS and also predental/medical. I believe alot of their success can be attributed to the willness of professionals within their church to go out of their way to help a "brother" out. This in the way of LOR, shadowing, admission boards.
Hey, that's cool. The same thing happened to my brother.👍 Hope everything works out for you.
aka hell bound
So a quick question... for those that served missions... did you max out service hours for that? Or just mention it in your PS? I have heard of people doing both... The argument being that proselyting is not a "community service" more of a service to the church. Just trying to figure out what to put next year. Thx!!! 😀
I think admissions is well aware of the whole mission thing and what went down. Just mentioning it is enough. I only plan to count those service hours outside of actual proselyting and church stuff. I think not many know that we dedicate several hours a week to community service while we're out there. Stuff that has nothing to do with church...just being contributors to the society in which we lived at the time. Those experience were some of the most memorable parts of serving. Soup kitchens, orphanages, disaster recovery. Those were some awesome times.
I've heard both Pacific and ASDOH specifically say it's kind of ridiculous to put thousands of hours.

Ya that makes sense... so when you list it are you going to be like
LDS Mission - 2500 hours
Because i was thinking of like individualizing it, for the "actual" community service i did while in different areas. Example:
Habitat for Humanity - 120 hours
Nursing Home - 80 hours
YMCA - 80 hours
etc...
Then just mentioning the actual mission in my PS... any thoughts?
Where did you go?
hahaha, he can join those of us who are already heading there by default
The dentist I volunteered for actually commented on this fact, that she had quite a few LDS classmates. So my dental school experience might get pretty interesting, because I haven't had contact with any Mormons outside of two ex-Mormons (well, plus the teenagers that stop me on the street and try to talk to me about the Book). I hope I won't bump heads too much, considering I'm gay and the Church has some beef with me *cough*Prop8*cough*.

BYU is (or was) the #1 feeder school of sending students to dental school.

Florida
To all the mormons: how do you feel about kids dressing up as missionaries for Halloween? Is it offensive?
Dude, which mission in Florida? I was in the Tampa mission.
Jacksonville!! How long ago did you serve? Did you know an Elder Nichols?
