Pollution

And you think working retail is hard? Try living there.. Our life in the US is so good we tend to forget how others live.

I'm not an environmentalist. Far from it. Yet, the lack of environmental control in the name of industrial progress in China is atrocious.

If I could, I would boycott all product made in China.. of course that's impossible.

Oh my.. That is awful. It certainly is hard to boycott Chinese products, but I have cut down drastically on products I'll buy from there, especially food. I hope this kind of information will continue to get out to people and that others will avoid Chinese goods as well.

This is why even some Chinese immigrants in America don't trust food products imported from China. But, of course, those food manufacturers realize this and try to deceive the consumers by replacing all Chinese works with Japanese and English on the labels to make potential buyers think that the products are imported from Japan.

That's why I don't worry about China as a long term competitor to the US. By the time they overtake us, they will all have cancer or their kid's will have three heads.

They are committing suicide in their factories. If we had to nuke them in a war, we wouldn't need guidance, the whole country will glow in the dark before long.

All a result of greed.

What's bad about environmentalism? If it weren't for people like Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir, James J Audubon, etc, it would probably have been just the same. China could use a few environmentalists... It would increase tourism for sure.

I didn't say it was bad, did I?

I believe people should do their part in reason to protect our surroundings. Yet I'm against people using environmentalism as a personal agenda for their gain. Like Al Gore prancing around in private jet and and big gas guzzling cars..and living in inefficient 10,000+ sq/ft house while telling others reduce carbon fuel consumption. And people who are against chopping down trees yet live in wooden framed houses.. scientist using gloom and doom of global warming as a means to obtain more funding..

I don't recycle. I use a load of carbon fuel... I live in a big arse inefficient house. I don't need environmental hypocrites dictating how I live. I'm a lot more conscientious about protecting the environment and wild life than most. Just because I don't subscribe to recycling and don't believe CO2 as the main culprit of global warming, it doesn't make me hazardous to the environment.

For those who believe CO2 is bad for the environment, may suggest they stop exhaling?

As long as you can turn it into a business case where they will make money, they will clean up. Show them alternatives that will not reduce overall profit, still maintain the same level of production, while improving public image (less pollution).

You could tax pollution, but then they might try to "hide" it, dump it illegally, or send it to their neighbor. They will probably bury it, or build plants near neighboring countries/states to dump the stuff across the border through the air/rivers.

What most of us tend to forget besides our superior standard of living, is that our history reflects others.

The Chinese industry right now is no less different than the US industrial revolution in the 1800s/early 19000s. The factory towns they have there are no different than the ones we had back here 100 years ago. The only difference is that there were newspaper and books (Sinclair's "the jungle) back then while we have the internet now.

I can tell you that the situation in China is a lot better than what people in Thailand, Vietnam, and India have to go through. Also in my most recent trip back to Asia, the economical footprint of the people there is non existant compared to the soccer moms I see driving SUVs around in Staten Island every day. Heck, Americans eat 2-3 times more than what people eat there. An entire in Applebees can feed a family of 4 there. Just think about the economical waste (in terms of raising cattles) to keep up with the buffets where millions of pound of food gets wasted.

regarding the pollution, when my boyfriend was in xi'an he would blow his nose and it would be dark grey or black from all the crap in the air. I can't even imagine!

I agree with the poor environmental control in China. What's also terrible is that the strong winds across the Taiwan Strait blow China's pollution into Taiwan's atmosphere.

Except the government controls the Internet, so it's no so easy for the people to force change. I think China is on a crash course with freedom. Sooner or later the people will resent the government telling them what to do with the money they have... I could be wrong, but in the long run totalitarianism does not work....

but with the Free Market everything will be ok, and corporations will regulate themselves!

yeah, I heard from my family that things are getting a lot better in china now. I dont get what you mean about the staten island soccer moms though...

But what's the energy consumption per capita look like compared to the US? I bet not even close.

Somebody didn't read the article......:meanie::meanie:

I did... it was to make a point that looking at the total energy consumption is not the best way to gauge this sort of data. China would have to use 4 to 5 times more energy than we do to catch up to our wasteful ways.

👍

China GDP/person is still low but they are growing.. The middle class in China are getting richer. They will eventually waste just as much energy as americans,,

GDP per capita
China $6,567
USA $46,381

pollution in china is due to our overconsuming habits.

If you dont buy products from china, US companies will move their pollution elsewhere.
