Poor Fitting Shoes

Having sold athletic shoes for over 6 years in high school and through college, I couldn't help but notice that so many people wear the incorrect size shoe. Not a huge shocker but now I see people coming in with knee, hip, and back problems still with shoes that do not fit well.

Are there any studies out there that cite the incidence or prevalence of people with poor fitting shoes?
