Hi, I am writing from the EU. Can anybody tell me why pedes earn almost the least in the US? And do you think I'd have any cance to get a pedes residency in the US( I am a male)? According to some websites pedes is not very competitive. thanks

Hi, I am writing from the EU. Can anybody tell me why pedes earn almost the least in the US?

Because their patients have the worst insurance coverage. The people who have the most kids often have the least money. If children don't get their health insurance through their parents (as it should be), the state provides a subsidized (or sometimes free) insurance program. These programs however only pay a fraction of the actual cost to provide the service. Also, peds doesn't have any real procedures (outside of the subspecialties like cards or GI). Reimbursement tends to be better for specialties that do procedures and worse for specialties that 'only talk' to their patients.

And do you think I'd have any cance to get a pedes residency in the US

If you have a heartbeat and an ECFMG certificate you can get a peds residency. The question should be 'can I get a decent peds residency?'. Some of the programs that fill mostly with foreign grads are not worth 3 years of your life. The people who had prior training from abroad tend to do well. They just sit out their three years in order to be able to practice in the US and don't care about the lack of teaching value. People without prior experience tend to have a hard time passing the board exam and becoming a good pediatrician.
The better peds residencies (mostly the ones at freestanding childrens hospitals) are competititve to get into. If you have outstanding USMLE scores and maybe prior experience abroad, you could still get in.
( I am a male)?
That is an advantage, not a drawback.

thank you very much for the very inteersting and useful answer. TS.
