I hear its strongly advised to not mention the desire to say you want to specialize and only subtly go around it saying "i've thought about it, but id have to learn more about the topic in the future years to come while in dental school before making a decision but as of now i would like to be a general dentist". Is this the same with teaching dentistry in dental schools on top of being a general practitioner? I would love to be a dentist but also since becoming an Orgo TA i've enjoyed teaching too so i would consider teaching dental in the future too if things go accordingly. Basically would it be looked down upon by saying this or looked up upon or some where in between?

I believe it would be a positive. Any time I attend an American Assoc of Ortho meeting .... there is always talk of a lack of qualified academicians. The main reason is that academicians do not make near the salary that private practice doctors make. Therein is the problem.

i would think they look down upon interviewees who go in saying they only really want to specialize in fields like ortho, omfs, endo, etc. since dental school trains you to be a general dentist, and there's no guarantee that a student will get into the specialty. with teaching, if you're still most likely practicing as a general dentist, I don't see why they would frown upon that.

There is a severe shortage of qualified individuals going into academics. If that is your interest, then I see no reason not to mention it. The problem is coming right out of school, you will really not be overly qualified to teach. Tack on a hefty student loan debt that you might have, and a career in academics becomes even more challenging as DS does not pay its junior faculty well.
