Any advice on certificate-granting vs. non-certificate granting programs? What about just taking the pre-reqs at a public or state or even a city college? I want to stay in California, but am pretty flexible as to where in CA, so does anyone know of an especially good program to apply to? FINALLY, what is this about being a disadvantaged, or an "underserved" student as a requirement for the UC schools? Seems a bit unfair to me...all of us doing a post-bac are disadvantaged since we already paid for a four year institution!

Congratulations Dr. Rizz!!!

OP,

Since you are flexible there is no need to attend a 2 year college. As to you concerns of advantage and disadvantage that bothersome notion is itself a disadvantage--do not worry about anyone else but you. If you are flexible enough to travel around the most expensive state in the union to get an apartment and attend school for the post-bac of your choice that you get into, it would behoove you to count your own blessings.

From that point forward you are judging your own expense for convenience and/or strength of reputation. There are prestigious expensive places with all the bells and whistles to do this and there are cheaper but adequate options. But the options are too numerous too give you the full guided tour.

What are your stats?

I have a 3.8 GPA (majored in French and International Political Economy) and relatively good test scores (GRE, SAT) but not much of a science background, not since high school at least.

Probably the most well-regarded of the CA postbacs is Scripps... with those stats you may be competitive although they may want you to see some health-care related activities. You haven't taken any of the pre-req courses, right?

Mills is the other more well-known postbac in CA.

Thanks, yeah I just applied to Scripps and am considering Mills and a few others like LMU and the UCs. It's just hard to know, and I want to be sure if I'm going to fork out 20-30k for this thing.

Well, a few years back when I was applying to PB programs, I only applied to Scripps, BM and Goucher. I ended up at Scripps for a couple reasons, I liked the small class sizes, support system, and atmosphere. I am not sure how much value you get out of some of the other PB programs, but Scripps record speaks for itself, Everyone who has finished the program in the last 10 years has gotten in.
