Hi Everyone,
I just recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a ~3.4 cGPA and a ~3.6 sGPA. Completed all of my pre-reqs at various CC's before transferring to Cal, where I was a non-science major (some seriously hardcore non-science upper divs + an undergrad thesis is the reason why my cGPA is lower than my sGPA). Also, my major program was nationally ranked 1st - higher than Harvard, Yale, and Princeton in 2009 (Does this matter? Will it show AdComs that I didn't really slack off in upper div non-science courses and that they were seriously HARD?)
I have over 2 years of shadowing a GP dentist (>800 hours) and have worked overseas in a third-world country providing dental screenings and treatment to impoverished communities. Also have a summer of atherosclerosis research at a medical school and am currently working on another emergency medicine research project.
I am planning on taking the DAT's in June and applying this upcoming cycle. What should I do for my year off? I have applied to a few SMP's and a few post-bacs. Would I be a competitive applicant without doing any programs? Or would I be better off just taking some upper-div science classes at a local university during the app cycle (I don't have any upper division biology classes currently) and continuing with my current research?
Also, what would be some good schools for an applicant like me to apply to? I know this is hard to tell without DAT scores. I visited UoP recently and am really excited about the school. It would probably be my first choice because it will allow me to stay in the bay area.
Thanks in advance for your help.
