Hey everyone,
Looking for a brutal, no-sugarcoating reality check on a strategic comeback plan I’ve mapped out.
My Current Baseline Stats:
Age: 23
Major: B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior (Completed)
Cumulative GPA: 2.76 (138 total credits. Massive credit load making the cumulative number incredibly heavy/sluggish to move).
The Context: Upward trend in my upper-level 300/400 neuroscience and behavioral courses (mostly straight A's), but heavily dragged down by massive volatility and poor execution in foundational introductory chemistry sequences early on in college.
My Target Execution Plan:
1 Summer 2026: Taking Organic Chemistry II lecture + lab as a non-degree student. Goal is a definitive 4.00 trend to start clearing out the chemistry prerequisites.
2 Fall 2026: Taking Biochemistry lecture + lab to lock down an 8-credit, pure 4.00 Post-Baccalaureate undergraduate row on AADSAS.
3 The DAT: Scheduled for August 29, 2026. Currently beginning an aggressive, hyper-focused study schedule aiming to drop a high/elite score to manually override automated GPA screening filters.
4. I applied for the Rutgers MBS graduate dental scholarship track and got denied soo
Extracurriculars / Profile:
Strong personal statement tying together my neuroscience background and clinical goals.
2 solid letters of recommendation locked in (1 DDS, 1 Science Professor).
Multiple dental offices worth of shadowing/clinical exposure.

The Strategy:
I am completely sitting out this current application cycle. I know applying right now with a blank DAT and a 2.76 is a waste of money. My goal is to completely build out the 4.00 Post-Bacc science trend this summer/fall, crush the DAT in August, and apply broad and early to holistic, non-traditional-friendly private programs (like NYU, Temple, Roseman, Touro) in Spring 2027 to enter dental school at age 25/26.
My Questions for the Sub:
1 For those who got in with a sub-3.0 undergraduate GPA, how heavily did schools focus on your standalone Post-Bacc row vs. the cumulative number?
2 Realistically, what is the absolute minimum DAT score I need to clear to make a human admissions reviewer manually open a 2.76 file?
3 Are there specific private institutions outside of NYU/Roseman/Touro that are notoriously receptive to high-DAT record-enhancers with a steep upward trend?
Appreciate any advice, criticism, or insight from anyone who has successfully taken the backdoor route. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm going to guess the answer, but did you get feedback from the Rutgers postbac program about why you were denied? Were they the ones who suggested you do postbac courses first?

Postbac courses: you should get at least a 3.7 in 30 credit hours of postbac courses. I don't know what you took prior to your first major to know what is left for a postbac schedule. The DAT is generally given year-around, so you could take it next March before a serious application effort. Most dental applicants know their DAT score before they submit an application (according to the HPSA Profile of the Accepted Applicant).

Did you attend the ADEA GoDental Virtual Fair earlier this month to network with the admissions teams about your questions for record-enhancers?

Quite a few schools will look at your most recent 30/45/60 credit hours in context (your biomedical science courses), but I don't know how they would look at a 2.7 in a biomedical-like major like neuroscience and behavior without a transcript.

Sorry, a high DAT accentuates the low GPA. I don't know what filters you are talking about; it doesn't work that way.

hi Mr smile, thank your for taking time out and replying.
I did email Rutgers MBS to see where i went wrong however their response was very general such as “
Acceptance into the Graduate School is highly competitive, based in part on past and current academic performance, scores on standardized tests, and compatibility between the interests of the student and the program”
Rutgers did not tell me to apply for the program, I found it myself and after asking advisors at my undergrad, which is Rutgers, they had no idea about it.

I haven’t taken any upper level biology classes, as my neuroscience classes were more neuro and psych based.
I have yet to take classes like anatomy, biochem, microbiology. I’ve completed the pre reqs such as gen bio and chem and physics. i’m in the process of completing orgo 2 right now.
In regards to the ADEA virtual fair, i wasn’t able to attend.
What is my best possible option?
Should i extend my DAT date? (2.5 months prep so far)
Thank you for helping me out!

that's not how it works
schools that have filters will not advance files below the cutoff, be it GPA or DAT

how may semesters were 300/400 courses in your major?
and were your non-major classes during that time also As?
