Hi i got recently graduated with a Computer Engineering degree from northeastern university. my gpa is around a 3.1

i'd like to go to a DO medical school preferably one in new jersey.

I'm applying to rider university to enter a post bacc program. I have not taken any chemistry or biology classes, but i have taken math and physics. I have also not taken the MCAT. Do you guys think i'll have a decent shot of getting into a DO school if i don't reasonably well on the MCAT and get good grades in bio and chemistry. Also will taking the bio and chemistry classes prepare me for the MCAT, i looked at a review book and didn't know much. Thanks

Don't worry about not knowing anything on the MCAT. If you haven't taken chemistry and biology, there's little chance that you would know anything (other than verbal and physics questions). Nonetheless, do not neglect the MCAT. You've got some making up to do for your 3.1. I don't know how many post-bacc classes you're taking or how many credit hours you have right now, but you should set a realistic target GPA (calculate out whats the max possible, then set your goal). Aim high, miss small. Do well in all the sciences and your science GPA will speak for itself.

You need to really give the MCAT your all! Don't sell yourself short by planning for poor performance (always have a backup plan, but don't plan on using it). Buy Kaplan, exam krackers, or princeton review books (or a combo thereof) and study hard through your post-bacc work. Buy old MCATs from the AAMC website and test yourself every so often. Set a reasonable goal and bust your tail for it.

Thanks for replying, Yeah i know i need to get my gpa up, i figure if i can get A's in bio and chem my cumn gpa will probably be around a 3.25- 3.3. Right now i plan on taking at least a year of bio , chem, and org chem with labs. Hopefully after taking the bio and chem classes the MCAT will make more sense and the rest will fall into place.

The cool thing about taking all the science pre-med classes after deciding to go to med school is that you are infinitely more determined to do well in them. Also, your determination will show up separately as your science GPA on your apps. I had a lower-than-your undergrad GPA and hit the pre-med classes well enough to get acceptances more based on that gpa(3.9) and MCAT (29 O) than my overall. Again, hitting the sciences hard will benefit you when it's time for the MCAT. By the way, I'd check the pre-reqs of the schools you want to apply to just so you don't get a surprise when they tell you to take this class and that class on top of what you've already taken. Good luck!

ADCOMs know that Engineering is a hard major. My major is Electrical Engg and Cum GPA is 3.5. Engg GPA is also 3.5. At the interview I was told that it is very difficult to have 3.0+ GPA with engineering major., so I must have really worked hard. So don't worry about it. Just focus on your MCAT. Decent MCAT will open lots of doors for you.

thanks guys appreciate all the replies 🙂
