Are med schools more forgiving of post baccs with less research experience than the traditional premed?

From what I understand, it is difficult to get into the top 25 or so research schools without 2-3 years of research experience.

I did my post bacc program in a year so I will only have about 9 months of part time clinical research experience.

Great question; I was wondering the same thing. I will have only 4 months of research at the most since it is hard to squeeze in everything in a shorter amount of time.

Hey, I was in the same boat last year. Just make sure to use your gap year to do research. Like you said, its not a lack of effort, you just physically didn't have the time. Just do as much as you can with your limited time frame and it'll turn out okay.

I think people have this misconception that having research experience is a requirement. While it can't hurt you, it definitely depends on where you are applying, the rest of your application, and what your career goals are, which should be evident from your primary app/secondary.

Oh, if you DO have research, you better be able to discuss it at length, in case it comes up in interviews, because it probably will. It does not reflect that greatly on you if the interviewer asks you basic questions about the research you were involved with, and you just washed glassware and never took an interest in what the research was about.

To the extent that a med school is interested in research experience, no, you do not get a "pass" because you are doing a post bacc.

You don't get a pass on anything, ever. And why should you? If you don't have time to do the research and the postbacc classes, take an extra year.

Geez.
