Hey everyone,

I had an interview for a doctoral program last week that just so happened to land on internship match day. While the data from previous years was briefly discussed during orientation, I overheard some current students during the tour discussing how only two of them got matched this time around. This was a little alarming, and I wish I had made it a point to inquire further about it while I was there. Unfortunately, this happened at the very end of the day, after all of the student interviews, Q + A's, and faculty interviews.

Would it be appropriate to follow-up in an e-mail to my interviewers or the program director that I met with and ask them to speak a bit more to their internship placement data? (The generic "if you have any more questions, feel free to reach out" was expressed) More specifically, can I ask them to disclose how many in the current cohort did indeed receive matches last week? This is a combined clinical-school program, and I'm curious as to how much that might play a role.

I'm just wondering if this is an appropriate question to follow up with, or if there is a certain way I should phrase it (because to be quite honest, I find the whole APPIC/APA/Internship thing to be a bit confusing, I just know I'm supposed to be looking for reported rates around/above 80-85%. I'd really rather not reveal my ignorance to the adcom or sound impolite if I don't know what I'm talking about). I'm thinking I should try to embed it within a polite and sincere post-interview thank you note. Additionally, who should this question go to? The faculty members I interviewed with? The program director that led the orientation and gave us the info about the data initially? All/none of the above?

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!

APA requires them to publish outcomes for the past 6 years I think. Take a look at their website to see this data for the past 6 years. I would say how they have done over time would be more important than how they have done on any given year.

Seconded, that data should be readily available. It may not hurt to reach out to one or 2 current students that you met.
