Now we are all fully matched. Is there anything that we need to do after the match?? I called the prg directors (both prelim. and adv.) and they just congrated me and didn't really tell me what I need to do next? ie signing contract and ect. Anybody has any idea?? thanks

They will send you all the information regarding contract, benefits, start date, vacation, licensing, etc. Don't worry about it at this point, but when you get the stuff, send it back to them relatively quickly since the GME office is going to be dealing with a bunch of new residents.

hi bubalus

thanks for the tips. Now i am a bit relieved now.

I advise you to take the longest vacation you can afford, ie Europe, hawaii, far east, Australia.... you will never have this opportunity again for a while.

Not even when you use your vacation time??

vacation time is often restricted to a week at a time (longer if you can get weekends off too), and some programs dictate when you can take vacation. some months are technically harder to take time off (ICU, night float, etc).

bottom line is your vacation time is not as flexible as you might like it, and usually it's 7 days max. If you can afford to take a longer vacation now before residency starts, DO IT. do it and don't regret one minute of it. dark days await you.

I am booking a ticket w/ my fiancee to Paris and japan. hmmm.. maybe a road trip to Canada.
I thought some of the prgs told us that we can take 2 weeks off at a time.
And if i am traveling abroad now, should i tell the prg ahead?? in case of they need to contact me or mail me the contract ??

depending on when ur leaving, I would call the residency coordinator, find out when are they sending the paperwork and the deadlines (very important) also you may metion that you will be out of country and e-mail is ur best way of communication (may want to open a hotmail account if easier than your school account). one more thing, if you'll be doing rotations at a VA hospital, make sure you ask the residency coordinator about the paperwork, (can be a pain in THE A$$). Remember, don't let anything stop you from taking the vacation of your life. (thats what I did) you don't owe anybody anything at this point, just find a way to do the paperwork and injoy ur freedom until July (i was on call July 1st in my intern year in ICU)

Make sure you get BLS/ACLS certified if needed and make sure you dont have an extended training period prior to starting. that is what is cutting into my otherwise 8 week long vacation.
