Hello,

Please post any information (match lists if you have them) on the new match lists coming out from prospective schools!

I thought it would be a great idea if people could post their schools new Match Lists as they come out.

1. It will help those of us who are about to make a tough desicion between schools. and..

2. Give us a chance to discuss the new lists.

(might be a little early but why not get it going.)

PS: If you pm me I can post the lists for you if you feel more comfortable doing it that way.

I will be somewhat vague here for the sake of anonymity for those involved, but I didn't realize until today just how tricky the match list results can be to interpret.

I know someone who matched into Hopkins today (in a top 3 ranked specialty for that institution, maybe 1 or not, it doesn't matter that much here)...

And it was not one of their top 3 choices...

But looking at a piece of paper out of context it sure would be more impressive than if you knew the situation.

Don't get me wrong, I was VERY impressed by this person and know he/she will have an AMAZING career, but how many times do we pre-allos look at this stuff and think "that's the place I want to go to get MY dream placement." I guess big names do not equal dream placements later in life.

It ain't all about the names people. Everything in context. But keep those lists coming because it is fun to see.

That being said, a HUGE congrats to all those matching today!

:)

They don't always, and just because its a big name does not mean the program is well known/respected. Institutions don't knock it out of the water with all of their departments.

To clarify, this particular residency at Hopkins is at least top 3 ranked, but I found it so interesting that this person could rank the school as low as they did and still get in considering the "paper strength" of the program. But this was kind of the point: until you get to that place in your career, you just don't know what that "dream placement" is going to be.

And it seems to me we can't really judge a match list just by the looks of it, even with the strongest programs represented.

If everyone gets their first choice, that's one thing, but I've noticed THAT information is RARELY (if ever?) published.

Anyone ever see that information and not just names on a list?

Some prestige ****** will remain prestige ****** and will take the highest ranked school at all costs. The rest of us grow out of it.

That being said, I do think there is some value to looking at match lists. Everyone cites anecdotal evidence of outliers ("I know someone who got a 25 MCAT and got into Harvard") yet we're encouraged, as scientists, to focus on means and not outliers. I don't see why matching, or applying to med school, should be any different. Your friend may not have ranked JH as #1, but I'm sure he placed equally impressive programs above it.

you sir are spot on imo. this stuff really means little to us. i suppose its just fun to look at? i know a lot of med students and i've asked them about match lists. i've only been told to ignore those because we premeds don't really know what they mean. on top of that, the whole correlation causation issue/self selction comes into play.

we don't know who chose what school or what caliber student chose what specialty. on top of that, this is fact btw, some schools are NOTORIOUS for overworking residents. some big name schools do this. thats just how it works. so you never really know your dream school for residency until you interview and meet fellow residents of that school. location/case load/case type etc.. so much goes into choosing a school. just like med school. would looking at an undergrad institution and what med schools premeds get into really help?

I agree, many of us know that we have no way to distinguish between a malignant this and a benign that, and that a match list is hard to read etc.

But we still want to see. And though it says and infroms us much less then "most" pre-meds realize it can be a usefull tool. For example I like to look at a schools match lists from the last three years and then compare.

Thanks a lot for posting!!!:laugh::xf:

Yikes, that's a lot of psychiatry, especially coming out of WashU. A little surprising.

Strongly agree. As a premed you won't know what's a good program, what's a good match, whether people are happy or unhappy. You only get a snapshot. This isn't about getting something competitive. It's about getting something you have chosen. Meaning if you are a top student, but really like something non-competitive, or you don't want to give up your family in nebraska, you may forego that derm residency in Boston to do peds in nebraska. To a premed this looks like a bad match. To you, it's a dream. You are picking what you are going to be doing for the next 40 years of your life, not something that will impress some premed wannabe in pre-allo. It's about choices. So you cannot know if a list is good or bad, and don't really know what people wanted, only what they got. You also as a premed don't know what programs are good or bad in each specialty. Believe me, the list is very different in every field, and generally incorporates places that aren't found at the top of the med school rankings lists. Every major program is good in some things, bad in others, maybe malignant in some. How do you find this out? You pick a field and sit down with a mentor in the field late in med school. So as a premed how useful is a list of programs? Not very. Waste of time. Amuse yourself but don't put any stock in it.

I appreciate these opinions, they were/are important for premeds and myself to consider. And the conversation is great.

But this thread is primarily intended to allow people to post 2010 matchlists in one place for all to find. Without judgement.

Thank you.

Anyone find Georgetown's yet?

Great year for Anesthesiology Matches. Fewer matches into Georgetown programs than in the past (I don't know if that's a good sign or a bad sign). Would like to see more Pathology matches :D (I especially liked Vanderbilt's 7 fantastic Pathology matches). Once again I am impressed at how Georgetown students place all over the country.

THANKS BLACKBIRD!

Thanks a lot for posting!!!:laugh::xf:

This might sound dumb, but is it obvious to tell when you interview at a program if it's malignant or not? Or is it just something you hear from other students?

And can someone please give specifics about what a malignant program does and why it's malignant?

Thanks. These match lists are cool, I'd like to see more.

While med students argue about certain things, premeds argue about certain things, residents and MS4 argue about this a lot.

A "malignant" program is a residency that works its residents to the bone, kills em, treats them like crap etc rather then another program that is (as compared to the norm) more manageable.

There is no way to know. A lot of the "ohh wow look, a prestigous name I know on a match list" residency programs may actually be malignant. I like to read in all the forums and it seems a lot of people disagree about which programs are actually "malignant." eg, Uwash was thought to be so but current students say they have changed. Some dont care and take the malignant residency ready to work and love it.

I think premeds, thought of ALL residencies as malignat. To much tv I suppose.

Met, the only way to find out is talking to people or SDN. It can change. So that is why matchlists can be misleading. But I want to see them anyway. Good thing to do is look at more then one year. You CAN get usefull info from them and it is interesting nonetheless.

eg, BU has only had one neurosurgeon resident per the last three years. Georgetown has graduated more per year. This could be due to this and that and whatever, it is interesting and says SOMETHING about where you are headed. I think we can handle it.:thumbup:

Keep Posting!!!

anyone have the match list for Pitt?

... eg, Uwash was thought to be so but current students say they have changed. Some dont care and take the malignant residency ready to work and love it. ...

See, this is the kind of post I think is dangerous. Uwash isn't one residency program. It's more like 20 specialties. Some may be benign. some may be malignant. Some may be well regarded, some may be the bottom of that field. You can't make a blanket statement about all residencies at a place, whether they are benign, malignant, have changed, etc. They are all independent, and can run the gamut, even within a single hospital.

As for malignant, I think Mandiblespeaks definition is a reasonable one. It's basically whether they make the residency hell for the residents, or regard it as a genuine teaching opportunity to train folks to be good doctors. Sure internship is going to be hard on everyone, because the hours are crazy and it's such a steep learning curve, but malignant is something beyond that -- and doesn't necessarily end at internship. Bear in mind that this is not something you will tell on interview day, where people are on their best behavior and the folks who give the tours tend to be hand-picked by the PD. It's something you have to find out through a mentor who knows the program, or from recent alumni from your school who are residents in that particular program (not a different specialty in that same hospital). Malignancy is almost always a top down issue, so if the chairman or PD is a SOB, the folks at the bottom (residents) are going to feel it. You are in a very precarious and vulnerable position as a resident, because you "need" to do well in the program and are in a system where there is often nothing to protect you from the whim or attacks of attendings. You need to know this to evaluate whether it's a place you'd be willing to spend 1, 3 or maybe 7 years at. It matters, often more than just "getting in" to a specialty.

So yeah, you can't just look at a program name you recognize and say, "gee that's a good match". It might be awful. It might be regarded as everyone's last choice. As a premed you cannot know. Heck, as a 4th year med student going into a DIFFERENT specialty, you won't know. This is very much a word of mouth thing and you only get the gospel once you pull the trigger on a particular specialty and sit down with the appropriate people. No way to know till then. Hope this clarifies. Hope I didn't distract from the lists too much, but allowing some of these claims unopposed I think causes more confusion for premeds than help.

Well said. And informative. I think it is best to assume premeds will read the lists, cant keep that from happening, but that you have better prepared us to read them, well that is a fine gesture.

I for one learned most of what I know regarding matchlists from you. Thank you. I simply contend that there is SOME usefull information. As I had specified above. eg, BU has only had one neurosurgeon for the last 3 years while Gtown has consistently had more then one if not multiple mathcing a year. This is significant because it says "something" for someone interested in neurosurgery. Can you go to BU and become a neurosurgeon if you want, yes. Could BU have more then 6 matching next year, yes. But as it stands, it seems the people/culture/research/style etc has it that neurosurgeons generally are less likely to be produced from BU then Georgetown. Maybe everyone who went to BU wanting neurosurgery switched because it wasnt much revered there. Will never know. But one could reasonably assume that gtown does a good job of fostering/allowing/helping its students go into neurosurgery if so desired. Just my 2 cents.

Speaking of BU, anyone have the 2010 list? Be funny to look at now wouldnt it. MATCH LISTS!

I don't think that's the right analysis. Neurosurg is one of those fields where the residency is crazy long, the specialty is very specific and self selecting, and even in a boon year you maybe have 1-2 people at a given school applying for it. So in a given year to have zero interest isn't very surprising or statistically meaningful. Nor is even a few years of zero. That's actually pretty common. It's about wants and desires, remember. There will be many schools where nobody wants neurosurg. That doesn't mean anything about the school, it just means that nobody in that particular class found spending a 7 year residency + research years, plus possibly a fellowship, in a very narrow, intense, surgical field all that appealing. The folks who got derm, plastics, optho, ortho or rads probably had a decent shot at this path if they were interested, but weren't so inclined. The school doesn't add that much to the analysis. Certainly if they didn't have a neurosurg department, then folks would have to do away rotations elsewhere if they were so inclined, which still is not such a big deal; they would want to do that anyhow for networking purposes, but at least then you could make a straight faced argument that a school wasn't ideal for that specialty. But in terms of looking at low numbers in a field where 1 is the normal number for most programs based on want... please.

So no, it's not significant. It gives you some insight into the wants and desires of the class that's matching, but not insight into your changes, or whether the program is any good. You are looking at data without context, and construing it in a way that really you have no basis for which to construe. Without finding out who wanted what, you have no idea who could have gotten what. It's misused data. You are better off going someplace you like and can do well rather than following some misguided notion that because nobody wanted neurosurg in a given year then this is a bad place for it. If you perform well on step 1 and do well in your clinical years and away rotations, you are setting yourself up pretty for whatever you want. If you don't do these things, well then maybe you'll be able to refer some patients to a neurosurgeon from your class and he'll let you watch. But the match list isn't going to tell you what you are pretending it's saying.

Yikes, that's a lot of psychiatry, especially coming out of WashU. A little surprising.

Yea the number of psych is unusual this year. Looking at historical match data that we have, its usually between 3-5 although in 2007, there were also 9 people. Theres also usually 2-3 rad onc too.

I politely disagree.
http://www.bumc.bu.edu/busm-osa/match-results/ BU's match lists for 7 years

http://som.georgetown.edu/prospectivestudents/degrees/faq/match/ 4 years.

1. Based on what you are saying I may concurr that BU's 7 year histoy of "the average" number of neurosurgeons doesnt say much. BUT a 4 year history of above average number of neurosurgeons at Georgetown is certainly significant. No matter how you slice it. I personally would like to study/meet other medical students who "want" to do neurosurgery. Personally the Medical Director of a clinic I work in has expressed some similar points as you but has gone in another direction completely. He has sat down with me and we have gone over the lists from schools I have been accepted to. I also have read this same debate (which you have posted on numerous occasions) by medical students and residents who disagree with you for reasons other then my own. eg, "A school that puts 40% of its student body into internal says something too" Which I also disagree with. But I contend, you can be sure that Georgetown does well for people interested in neurosugery and can expext, from the statistical relevence of the last four years, that they do better then average (by your own description of average) whatever the reason may be, or even have higher then average interest. As just one example of what can be discovered in the lists.

But more to the point.

POST MATCH LISTS. Because, not to be offensive, the point of this thread was not to discuss if we should or shouldnt read them, we are going to! We will, we have, and so on. There are a lot of other members here who would like them as well. And while I agree with certain points you have made I think some of your reasoning is flawed, atleast enough to warrant me to say.. No more hijacking.

Keep posting match lists.

More match lists. More! Thats what "this thread is for"

I got to go to Match Day yesterday, and it was so much fun. It was wonderful to see how happy all the 4th year were, and it definitely helped to put things in perspective as I spent all today studying :)

Really impressive. No matter how you look at it.

Again, you don't know how these programs rank in each field, which ones are good versus malignant, and more importantly, what people actually wanted (as opposed to what they got). None of these lists are impressive or not, without knowing the individuals in the class and a lot more about the program hierarchy in every specialty than any premed could know. As a premed you cannot read these lists usefully.

So guys continue listing the match lists on here, but cool it with the uninformed editorializing like the above. That's what I'm trying to counter here -- to get premeds to understand that a list with lots of big names/specialties can often be a horrible list if (1) the places are malignant, (2) the programs happen to be bad in those particular specialties, or (3) the places were not what the person actually wanted. All you see is a lot of big names/specialties, which to you may seem impressive, but to the actual applicants, match day might not be so rosy. You just can't know, from your vantage point. You'll get my point in a few years.
