Graduating medical student trying to come up with a game plan. One thing I am trying to figure out is what kind of offers newly-minted attending psychiatrists are getting. Can those of you fresh out of residency speak to some of this? I will most likely sign up for a PSLF eligible plan, but I don't know how to compare non-PSLF eligible jobs to those that are, especially in psychiatry. Do the non-PSLF jobs have better patient population? better hospitals? better benefit plans? better hours? sizable bonuses? their own loan repayment options that rival PSLF? I am asking because I don't want to lock myself into a PSLF-eligible job by making minimum payments on the loans.
I really want to focus on my question above, but I know that people will say it depends, so here are specifics:
- loan amount on the higher end of graduating students (top 10% I am guessing)
- I will (likely) have a high-earning spouse with no debt, so I can tolerate some risk
- no hardline geographic restrictions, but family is on the east coast
- strongly considering child
- prefer outpatient
- have considered private practice
Thanks for all the input.
