if you wanted to postpone an interview for a school that is perhaps not so high on your priority list, is it appropriate to send an email to the admissions office telling them so (how would you phrase it tactfully?). or can you just sit on the invitation indefinitely? this particular school has offered me a few dates, so i guess another option would be to take the very latest date which can be rescheduled or even cancelled later on?

If by post-pone, you mean you want a date that they aren't offering, then no that is a bad idea. While some schools will set up a separate day for you to come interview if you really can't make their other dates, I feel like it is shady to request this from them if you may end up cancelling when you get in somewhere else (it takes a lot of work to get faculty to interview you at correct times).

You should do what you said and schedule the latest date possible, and if you have heard back elsewhere by then you can cancel if you want. This happens frequently.

I didn't mean that I wanted to request my own personal interview date, just that I'm hoping to hear from other schools first before I schedule an interview at this school, which is not a top choice. I will probably take your suggestion - thanks!

I think postponing your less desireable options is a good idea, dont wanna waste money on a school that youre likely not going to attend. But, I also set up one of these interviews as my first. Im going to take it seriously but, theres less pressure I figure, kind of like a practice run.
