A couple weeks ago I was talking with a co-worker. We were discussing jobs and careers and what not. She was saying how there are some careers out there that give you decent or average pay but you get good benefits, more flexibility and can move up over time. She then said there are careers where you can make lots more money but don't have as much flexibility, do not have much say and essentially not much influence.

So it had me thinking: Power vs. Money. Is it better to be able to move up the ladder, have influence and have the potential to have some (or all) power to call the shots. Or is it better to make the big time bucks but not have that flexibility, movement and power.

Both circumstances have their pros and cons.

So, I am throwing this question out to SDN Land. What do you guys think? Would you rather have the power or the money? Why?

The question is an "either/or". Its one or the other. If you could only pick one.

Most of you are already settled into your careers or at least know what you want to pursue. And, I am sure quite satisfied! That's fine. But, reflecting back how would you answer the question?

Money

Al Pacino said it best in scarface.

Someone please post a youtube of that part. I don't know how to post videos. BTW it would be cool if someone would show me how to post videos from youtube.

I'll take the Benjamins.

You can keep the power.

I feel powerful raising my kids/driving my Robalo cdazy fast with the theme song of Miami Vice screaming thru the boat's stereo 🙂laugh🙂/popping out ten reps with the 110lb dumbells on the incline bench/throwing a ball to my left-handed-batter five year old and watching him whack the s hit out of it/listening to my two year old say his new catch-term ("OHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHH") over and over......

Just keep the zeroes coming.

I'll show up and do whatever is required.

And I'll do it well.

First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the women.

😀

Money. I don't give a crap about power at work.

Medicine aside, a job is a tool to make money so you can enjoy your life. I guarantee your wife and kids don't give a rat's ass what kind of power you have at work. When you retire, you lose the power. The money still counts, though.

Money. Power is illusory.

And lvspro, it will be interesting to see how your requirements for your future job change as you approach the end of your residency. When I was a CA-2 I wanted to do liver/heart/lung transplants on achondroplastic dwarves who were Jehovah's witnesses. Six months prior to finishing, I was looking for jobs where I threw in LMAs for breast biopsies and knee scopes.

Peace out

Is this a serious question?

Of course I'd take superpowers.

Oh you meant power within the hospital?

Yeah, I'll take the $ instead.

When you're at the page of the vid you want, go to the URL and copy the end part of it after the equal sign (the gobbledygook random letters/numbers). Paste them inside the [YOUTUBE] tags (there's a button above the reply box when you post) and voila!

I think by the nature of the job, anesthesiologists probably in general don't go into it for the power. (Not saying they go into it only for the money though...)

I wonder how the answers would differ if you asked this in the Neurosurgery forum. 😀

I think the original poster meant not necessarily power over people but power over your situation schedule... whether to come in late and work a little later.. and power over your work environment and ability to change it at will. This is very important of which we have NONE. or at least very little.

Few doctors have that, and the ones that do are typically despised.

MONEY

Maybe it'll change later, but right now my goal is to be that guy in the OR that everyone calls when they have difficulty. To reach that point,I think I'll need plenty of experience as an attending.

with power comes paperwork and rounds.

In the infamous words of P. diddy "it's all about the benjamens baby" and it is so true. Power is temporary, money can last forever

Great post. This is what this forum should be about, not the political rantings of coporolia.

Now to get political..jk

Power and money are relative. You'll never have enough of either and if you live your life chasing either one you are doomed to misery.

I know...how very Buddhist of me.

I guess I've just been around enough to know. Money and power are drugs. We should know the effects of drugs better than most. That buzz or high you feel when you take a joyride in your new BMW or show off your Rolex at your best friends wedding is fleeting. And when you come down, sometimes you come down hard.

What should matter is setting worthwhile goals and achieving them. Money and Power will be byproducts of your real successes.

Don't flame me for being pop-psychy, I just hear this money-chasing thought process from a lot of residents and it irks me.

I respect your post.

Very insightful and real.

Problem is in this day and age you've gotta look out for you during your earning years unless you wanna spend years 65-85 living in a box under the overpass.

SSMALLZ pegged it:
