Anyone familiar with private practice opportunities in or around Savannah, Ga? My wife said it seemed like a place she would like to live, but I know nothing about the area, group dynamics, or opportunities. Anyone with any insight about the market there?

2 major groups in savannah. Anesthesiology consultants covers memorial - major academic center with level 1 trauma, cardiac, nicu, etc. All members of the group do all cases 1:4 supervision. Initial salary is fair, but they were offering a three year partnership track with a buy-in. Work hours/call were very reasonable. Partnership income was relatively high. This group had three partners leave and start their own group at a smaller site in another community, and hired at least 2 new grads last year. The folks I spoke with seemed happy, but I got the feeling it was a stressful job.

THe other group I know less about - they cover St Joe's/Candler, and several other small sites. The group was taking a lot of call. They had several non-partnership track listings on gaswork over the last couple of years to do big cases like hearts. Savannah is a pretty town in many ways, but it also has it's fair share of criminal activity and the like.

I did my 3rd and 4th years of med school at Memorial (and spent a month with the anesthesia group). It would be my choice of private practice had I not decided to stay in academics. Average attending work week ~55 hours and pay probably above 90th percentile. 4:1 supervision keeps them busy. Most of the attendings trained at UF.

Thanks for the reply. I have a couple of questions. In that area (or in private practice in general), is 1:4 supervision the norm as well as a 3 year partnership track with buy-in? It seems like a bit much in terms of supervision, especially at an academic center (sometimes tougher cases, sicker patients).

Thank you for the reply. What was it about the group that you liked that would have made them your choice if you had chosen to do PP? Also, do you think there is a regional preference as far as where you trained and being hired since many of the attendings trained at UF?
