I know of a few individuals pursuing multiple specialies with the intention of using them simultaneously in private practice.

Here are a couple of examples:

  1. An Orthodontist recently accepted to a Pediatric Dentistry residency
  2. An Oral Surgeon attending an Endodontics residency
  3. An individual pursuing Orthodontics followed by Periodontics

What are your thoughts on pursuing Multiple Specialties? Have you known anyone to do it? Would it even be worth it?

I would like some feedback on this one because I am quite perplexed by these people.

I think it depends on the state but most allow only practicing 1 specialty at a time.

Is this true?

I know that if you announce yourself as a specialist, you are limited to that specialty. But if you are certified in MULTIPLE specialties, can't you announce yourself as a specialist in multiple areas and limit your practice to those areas?

I've never heard that and can't imagine it's correct. I know multiple dual certified ortho/pedos in practice and just met one of the 5 endo/pedo dual specialists in the country. And no, I have no idea why someone would want to do endo/pedo!

I know plenty of ortho/pedo as well as prostho/perio... I also know there are a few ortho/OMFS... a very rare species indeed! But they only practice in one discipline... and usually in the academic field.

i know of someone who is a dental anaesthesiologist / endodontist...

Those days of single discipline specialty must be over! Well, I am considering in taking up orthodontics/sex therapy. How about that? It would be a great chat-up line! Girls would really dig that!

You may want to throw in a subspecialty in TMD dysfunction, depending on how "in depth" the sex therapy gets!

Thanks for the input!

Anyone else???

There is a Ortho/Perio faculty at OHSU. Also, I personally know a Pedo/OMFS although he only does OMFS. ALso there is a Endo/Anes attending in the Anesthesiology department as an attending at OHSU.

Seriously! Or maybe an expensive case of procrastination. The more specialty programs you do the longer you can wait to "get a real job".
