Practising Dentistry in USA with an Italian D.D.S.

Hi 🙂
I'm an Italian dental student and I'd like to know if I could practice dentistry in the USA with my italian degree .
I've got some questions :
-What exams should I take : the TOEFL exam , NBDE I , II or what ?
-Maybe a 2-year specialization course ( es. orthodoncy ) could be sufficient to gain the american DDS title ?
-Does it depends on the dentistry school I've done ?
I'm graduating at Bologna University ,Italy.
Do you know if it's accreditated by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation ?
Anyway I've red that it depends on the state , I'm interested in practising in California .

You might be able to practice in Minnesota with your Italian degree. You have to pass national board 1 , 2 and toelf. Pass the state license exam and jurisprudence exam as well. At the very least. I may have skipped a few steps. Check the web site.

California, not any more. Not unless you get DDS from the US.

Or you can complete Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) or General Practice Residency (GPR) and practice in select states. I dont know what those states are. These programs have their own requirements.

If I take a 2-years post doctoral master in orthodontics at UCLA as a foreign trained dentist must I attent anyway 2 years of pre doctoral studies to practise in the USA ?
Because in that case it would cost me :

200k dollars for 2 years of pre doc +
200k dollars for the master =
Nearly half million dollars and 4 years without working !

Another question :
If I manage to practice in Minnesota , is it possible to move to California after that ?

I am not sure what UCLA requires. You should look at the website.

I am 95% sure that you cannot move to California to practice w/ out US DDS/DMD. At least I dont know anyone who managed to do that.

Try 2 years DDS program at Universidad De La Salle(Leon-Mexico), in order to practice in California.

Also, can a dentist trained in the US then practice in Italy or anywhere in Europe?

you have to hold an EU degree to practice in Europe.

To practice in Minnesota, you would NOT have to take the TOEFL, NBDE I or II. You DO have to take the Minnesota Jurisprudence exam and any ONE of the following regional board exams NERB, CRDTS, SRTA, or WREB. However, if you take the WREB, you also have to take parts I and III of the ADLEX exam.

Even then, you would only be given a LIMITED dental license. Under this license, you would have to be supervised by a licensed dentist in Minnesota for three years. That dentist could limit the serves you provide based on his own conscience. After THREE YEARS, you would be evaluated by the Minnesota dental board and the supervising dentist. If everyone agreed, you would receive an UNLIMITED dental license.

As far as I know, the only way for you to practice in California would be to do 2 years of dental school at an accredited school. But to do so, you would probably need to take TOEFL, NBDE Part I and II. Then do an AEGD or GPR residency. As someone mention previously, the cheapest one might be the one in Mexico. I understand they are accrediting one in India too. I don't know.

You know, there's a saying in the USA that "the grass is always greener on the other side." I have looked into practicing dentistry in Italia as I have family there. But realistically, it's too complicated for both of us to switch countries. You will be happy if you stay in Italia. I can be happy here too.

It's called " visinting dentist " in US , but in Italy it's not very common for dentistry , except for masters.
You should contact the university directly , the problem is that each university has its own rules and each department too!
I think it's better for you to contact directly the professor , in Bologna we have lots of prof in contact with US university !
But you have to be a dental student !
What's your field of interest ?
To practice , it's complicated .
I think it's very hard and you should get an european degree .
What are you going to study in Italy , and where ?
If you want more infos , I can give you my msn adress !

I'm currently getting my DDS at the University of Toronto in Canada. Do you know if it is possible to associate for an English dentist in Italy (maybe Rome) for a year or 2 after I graduate? Do I have to take any exams there, or anything like that? I am hoping to do this as a way to travel and start paying off my student debt, and then return to Canada to settle down and start a practice of my own eventually. Can it happen???

The perceptorship programme will be good in the sense that it'll add US work -exp to your CV when you apply for a DDS in USA.
You should also look at the AEGD for one year/two year exp in the US. With the continuous 2-year programme you can get licence in some states like NY, Washington etc.. I think there are about 9 states that'll give you licence after the 2 year AEGD/ 2 year residency / atleast 2 year MS.
In some states Pedodontists are preferred for this kind of licence.

If you wanna settle in Calif, Your best bet is the DDS.. you can always work sometime and pay off your DDS loan before starting Ortho.

Mexico could be an option but I've heard that the licence exam pass rate for the mexico school is pretty low..(I have not been able to confirm this, if anybody has reliable info, please add it here)

I am quite sure that there is no accrediated school in India. I am an Indian and had there been any such school here, there would have been a mad rush for it - we would have known for sure.

the best ortho programme in the US is the one that takes you in!!
