I teach independently. I did the MCAT without a course, so I try to pick students to work with who I think are are right type to approach the MCAT in a similar way. I'm not saying that the courses are never useful. Some students might benefit greatly from the courses. I wasn't one of them. You know, strategies that work with one person, may not always work with the next person. So I just try to make sure that the students I work with would most likely benefit from following a similar study schedule and strategy to the one I used.

Haha, my mom's the same way. She made a list of where I should apply - I think I only applied to one of the ones on her list because all the others were way out of my league!
Ha, yeah, my mom came to visit me (I work at Stanford) and after taking a walk around the campus, was like "yes, here will do. You can go here." I was like, er, thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

the fact that you aren't familiar with lolcats is probably a healthy thing.

wow...apparently "lolcats" are more popular than I thought.
This one was general enough that my friends who know that I'm really interested in surgery would get it.
I wanted to make the 2008-2009 lolcat into my SDN avatar (because only people on SDN would get it), but it was too small and you couldn't read the text anymore. 🙁
