I am a first year medical student (DO) and we recently finished up our first semester. I finished with 3 C's, 2 B's, and 2 A's. I am particularly interested in the super competitive specialites but I also don't really want to do family or internal medicine (nothing against those specialties, just not what I am interested in). I am thinking more along the lines of anesthesia, general surgery, or pathology. I was simply wondering if anyone knows anything about these specialtes competitiveness and how those grades might affect me. Thank you for any help with this

The better you do, the better your class rank, but I'm not sure how much it matters. Only 1 person on my interview trail ever commented on my pre-clinical grades. I don't think it matters that much. Board scores are most important. Good LORs and good clinical grades can help a lot too. But a good step 1 matters most.

you should ask yourself why you only landed C's in a few of those courses. just get unlucky or are there content/comprehension deficiencies? learn the content well for your boards... because they will hold a lot of weight.

check out the 2012 pd survey to get an idea of what program directors are saying in terms of ranking their prospects:

Residency directors do not give a rat's ass about your grades. COMLEX, LORs, class standing; that's what counts.
