pre-interview hold?

I've heard a bunch of people mention this - what exactly is pre-interview hold? Do people just assume they are on hold when they have been complete for a while w/o an interview invite, or do you actually call the schools and ask them about it?

Usually it is only official when you get a letter or email. Although at this point I never expect to hear back from UCSF, and I consider myself to be on hold there.

GW sends a letter telling you that you have been put on hold pre-interview and will be re-evaluated in february, after other applications have been received and reviewed- basically, we don't want to reject you, but you haven't merited an interview yet 😡
