If you have a "red flag" but interviewed early, are you still at a disadvantage even though you interviewed?

Simply put, assuming that you nail an interview 100% (i.e. you are the ideal student with respect to the interview), if something is a "red flag" academically, is there any chance post-interview?

That probably depends on the school. I think a lot of schools would only invite you if they would be willing to accept someone with your numbers/LORs/ECs. But other schools might have one committee member choosing the interviewees and then the entire committee sees your application post interview... in that case they may reconsider the "red flag".

if you have interviewd early then they think your academics are fine, unless you just recently got bad grades that they dont know about!

my interviewe that i went on in mid sept, told me and i quote "you stats are amazing thats why your here, now i want to know about YOU" endo quote.

so interviews are just there to see if you are crazy. barring that you didnt curse or assault them in the interview( ie. or act like a weirdo) , i would say a guaranteed acceptance.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, and especialy not in med school admissions.

sure it is. read my previous post i just told you what is guarateed! if you have a good interview, not being a weirdo= guaranteed acceptance!😎

your arrogance is amazing...

I was wondering the same thing about myself. I have gotten some interviews at schools I had considered way out of my league. My stats are below their averages, both GPA and MCAT. Why are they bothering with me? I see they offer interviews to a lot of people with lower stats, but ultimately they'll just reject me, right? Is this just a big waste of my time/money?

(BTW -- I've got my first interview at such an out-of-reach school this Thursday, and I'm not feeling very confident.)

I figure I have a 95% of being rejected at these schools. But if I don't go to the interview, I'll have a 100% chance.

But still ... why are they messing with my head?!?

I should ask these people that are getting waitlisted at EVMS. Did your interviews go bad or did you feel only "OKAY" coming out of them? Is that why maybe you were rejected? Or did you have red flags in your academic profile?

I would suspect that red flag= no interview. Lets be honest guys, if you're not good enough in science for a particular school then they are not going to waste their time interviewing you.

Now what the real question is how personal are your LOR's and how real are your essays. That's the deal breaker IMO. That and how you do in the interview.

To teh OP : red flags depend on the school. Some, (OHSU in particular) only care about your stats EC's, LOR's before the interview. After the interview, the only thing they care about is your performance during it. You might want to call the school to figure out what their particular policies re: interviews are. best of luck.

Back4more, i'm in a similar boat with a low VR, I briefly talked about the reason in my personal statements and secondaries and I got an interview from a school that's very picky while other less competitive schools say i'm under review, so I guess if you do get an interview, they are willing to get past your red flag as long as you have an honest plausible explanation

I disagree... most schools ultimately accept less than half of the interviewees and I doubt that half of interviewees "act like a weirdo" during the interview, so something else must be coming into play.

If you got an interview your chances are 50/50 AT WORSE in my opinion

and even though I may be being foolish, i sort of agree with bruin about this issue. not as arrogantly as he/she puts it, but I do think that as long as you have a good personality and interview well, you should be either accepted or waitlisted afterwards...

At some schools your file still holds the most weight. At least that's what my interviewer at Case told me. He basically said that most of the info needed to make a decision is in your file, and that an interview is just "icing on a cake."

agreed, but why would they invite you if you werent up to par "on file"

One of the Texas schools told us something similar... you get points for your mcat, gpa, letters, ecs, place of residence and interview (so the interview is a relatively small part of the pie) and if your point total ranks somewhere in the top half of the interviewees, you'll likely be accepted. Other places (like OHSU) count the interview as 80% of your final score
