hey, I was just curious if anyone has done any of the summer internships at any of the podiatry schools? also, is there really any benefit to these versus shadowing a podiatrist because it almost looks like a shadowing experience that you have to pay for.

thanks

I did the pre-professional internship at OCPM last summer. It was free and we were given the option of staying with a student during the week. I commuted from home but the girls that stayed with students that week really enjoyed the experience.

OCPM's internship was not just about the shadowing. I had the oppurtunity to shadow at both of their clinical sites, tour the school, talk with many students and recruiters (Aaron and Laurie were amazing at answering all of our crazy questions), talk with a prestigious alum/trustee of the school, and interview with Dean Lott. We also had presentations on finaid and housing, so by the time I had my interviews I felt like a pro. Actually, now that I think of it, the internship experience came up in my Scholl interview. 🙂

One of the afternoons we were let out a little early and were able to go to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Lake Erie, and Legacy Village/Beachwood Place (shopping!). If I remember correctly, OCPM bought us lunch on two of the days and let us eat breakfast free of charge in the cafeteria each day.

If you can afford the plane ticket/gas to go to this internship, I highly reccomend it!👍

Both Temple and OCPM's programs are FREE. Ohio even pays the cab cost from the airport to the school itself! Futhermore, you don't pay for a hotel since you have a student host. The only incidentals are transportation to the Cleveland area (car/bus/plane) and a few meals. For Temple, I believe they put you up in the doubletree or dorms for your stay.

I would not pass up this opportunity. I did the one at ohio and it was a very good experience. You also get to sit in on classes, talk to current students (so you get real info on things and not loaded BS from recruiters), and overall, see if the school is for you. I totally recommend it.

P.S. NYCPM has a 3 day program as well as a 5 week pre-matriculation course.

California (CSPM) is offering one as well. I got an email the other day promoting it.

Anyone heard anything about it? I think its 5 days long.

The internship experience is a very good opportunity that a potential applicant can benefit from. Being able to take a tour of a school and its facilities, attending lectures, meeting with students, faculty, staff, patients and alumni all add to the experience. It may serve as a source of motivation, it may be an unforgettable experience. If one can make the sacrifices(time committment, expenses, etc.) one should definitely take advantage of these internships. I would highly recommend that you attend an internship,if you can. Lastly, make sure you check with the schools regarding the application. Temple internships, as far as I know are limited to people who had not previously applied to any AACPM school.

July 20-24.

I'll prob be there.

Its totally free too! They pay for your room and board and up to $500 for travel expenses.

Plus one of the days they take you around the bay area and show you cool stuff.

Ill be there too! Although its right before when I want to take my MCAT. I think they offer an MCAT training session as well though.

P.S. Does anyone else have problems accessing the samuel merritt website? I can get on at school but from home (brand new computer!) I cant get on. It just keeps timing out... Anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah they have an MCAT strategy session day too.

I think they let you take a practice MCAT. Then they go over all of the sections.

That's so great about the travel expenses! No other pod school with internships do that (minus Ohio covering the taxi ride from the airport)

does anyone know, on average, what the GPA is for people who are accepted into this? also, do you have to do a phone interview or anything or do they just pick from the online application?

OCPM has an application available online. I think they still require a LOR from your academic or pre-health advisor and of course, your transcript.

Not sure on the GPA, but when I was on the internship one of the employees told us that they would not accept you if they didn't think you had a shot at a pod acceptance. So you could probably do the internship with nothing less than a 2.75.

It is easy to get accepted to the pod program at OCPM, I would imagine it would be even easier to get into the internship. I felt it was mostly aimed at undergrads who wanted to learn more about podiatry and what the field offers. They throw in some pro-OCPM things along the way, but overall it's a great exposure to those unfamiliar to podiatric medicine.

does anyone know how to get an application for the one in california? i've heard that OCPM has one which i've looked at but i can't find the internship application or even anything on it for the one in cali
