Hey everyone 🙂 So I'm in my second semester of pre-reqs at a CC, second semester of college period, UF being my top choice, and I keep hearing that the majority of people are completing their pre-reqs in 3 years. They're all,"What? You're applying already?" when I say that I'll be applying this fall for the 2010 incoming class. Is anyone else in the same boat? Is completing the pre-requisites in two years crazy? I mean, I'll be taking the PCAT at least two times before I apply, I'm getting a job as a pharmacy tech, and I'll finish all my classes before fall of 2010, I'm just a little confused as to how many people did the same thing I'm doing. Thank you so much in advance for your responses:biglove:

If you can convince the ADCOM that you are ready - then by all means - Apply.

The ADCOM use past experience as a measure of future success. That is why your grades in Organic and A&P are important. We did accept one student this year that had only completed one year's worth of school - but she was ridiculously prepared in other ways.

If you are ready - go for it - there isn't a prize for getting there first however. Make sure your grades are high, your involvement is memorable, and your LORs are extraordinary.

Thanks so much for responding. See, my confusion is also this though, I've heard from many sources that it's not looked at favorably if a CC student takes only a few courses a semester, because it could mean that they can't handle the workload. If so, how is it that some can extend the pre-req courses to 3 years? I understand it's unique to CC, but still. And I don't want the age-old CC vs. Univ debate to be started up because of this, I'm really trying to figure out what to do, because the advisors at my school aren't much help and I'm desperate grabbing at straws for any information that could help me.
Overall, if I do wait and I apply for 2011, I would probably have stronger involvement (because of prolonged membership in clubs, etc.) and it would be easier to manage excellent grades while still working as a pharm tech, but they'll look at how many classes I've taken each semester and be like, "Oh, that's why." 👎 🙁
I can manage the classes and working, plus some volunteering, and I can get A's in my science courses, but lower grades (like B's, not D's or anything lol) in the general education ones.

No need to wait another year to do it. Try applying for the 2010 class and if it doesn't work out you can always do it again next year.

In 3 years time - students are taking more than "just" the pre-reqs. You should also be taking foreign language, additional major courses, art course or whatever suits you... You should also be involved in extracurriculars...

I haven't a clue what you mean by the three year deal being only a CC.

One issue with CCs that you MUST address - What are you going to do when you complete your AA? Are you simply going to stop taking courses? Or are you going to continue on to pursue your BS? In practice, you should be applying to both a 4 yr university and pharmacy school at the same time (Around the Fall of your last year at the CC). That way - if you do not get in this year (to pharmacy) - you can begin pursuing your BS without delay.

I went to a CC after the military - Applied to UF in January of 06. Completed my AA in spring of 06. Started at UF and applied for pharm school in the Fall of 06. Accepted and began pharmacy school Fall of 07 = Thus completing the three year prep cycle.

If you can do it in two - by all means - do so.

I thought you had to have a bachelor's degree for UF?

Well, apply this summer/fall, and be prepared not to get in. If you do, that's great news! If you don't, try again next year, and spend the intervening year gaining experience and taking additional courses. Work hard to prove you can handle it. It won't cost you that much to take two shots at it, and it shows them that you're serious. Re-applicants have a very good admittance rate, from what I've heard.

OP, my best advice to you is to get that silly notion out of your mind as soon as possible. If not, I thank you.

Thanks to each of you for your responses 👍 I really appreciate it.

iBeast, if you could just clarify your post for me, what silly notion?

I'm by no means an expert in admissions for UF, but from the information I've gathered so far as long as you have the pre-reqs you're good to go 😉

hey i'm in my second semester of community college too! and i'm doing the 2 year pre-req thing. lol

In practice, you should be applying to both a 4 yr university and pharmacy school at the same time (Around the Fall of your last year at the CC). That way - if you do not get in this year (to pharmacy) - you can begin pursuing your BS without delay.
hey i'm doing this too! haha.

awesome! ^_^ how's it going for you so far?
lol i'm having like a crisis right now. it has to do with ******ed scheduling and lame prerequisites for courses i need (prerequisites for prerequisite pharmacy courses, pretty much) so i'm trying to take courses at another community college that isn't as strict about the prerequisites but because i'm a new student, i can't register until 2 weeks after everyone else. arghhhh.

i'm just praying i can get the courses i need :x

and i'm debating whether or not i really need linear algebra and differential equations 'cause UC Berkeley (i go to a california community college btw) is the only UC that wants it. urgh. i rather go to UCLA (if not pharmacy school). lol. safasjdsklfjaskl. rant rant rant. lol.

man, its so hard to juggle all the courses i need to complete and by what date i absolutely must complete them.

blahh. so how's everything going with you? are you only applying to UF? if not, what schools are you applying to?
