Hi-

I need some advice on what's the best path for me to take in an effort to get accepted into DO school.

Background: I graduated in 2009 from an Ivy league undergrad with a poor science gpa. I basically failed orgo I (UW), got C's in physics, a B in Bio I and C+ in bio II, and a C in Gen Chem I and a B in Gen Chem II.

Currently, I'm working full-time in clinical cancer research while attending school part-time in a MS program for clinical nutrition at NYU. This semester I start a basic science sequence, and will be taking microbiology with the hopes of doing well. I will eventually have to take human physiology, re-take Orgo, and biochem. I also have to take some specialized nutrional science and public health courses.

My questions are these: given that I graduated college over 4 years ago and did sub-par in the science pre-reqs, should I re-take every single class? There are obviously financial and time concerns associated with this. My tentative plan would be to do an extensive MCAT review of physics/bio with prep courses and tutoring. Given that I do well in the basic science courseload in my MS program, do I have an adequate chance of acceptance into DO school without retaking all the pre-reqs? This is also assuming that I can achieve a competitive MCAT score and meet all other eligibility requirements. Moreover, does grade replacement actually occur in gpa calcualtions for acceptance into DO schools?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback/advice. I'm considering going back to school full-time to complete my masters program, but given the cost and time commitment, I want to make sure that it's a risk worth taking. After working in healthcare for many years post undergrad, I know that I have no other career passion than evenutally becoming a physician.

Thanks!

How far are you from completing your masters? D.O. schools allow grade replacement if the course is the same and same credit hours. If you have several prerequisites to complete and do grade replacement to get your GPA into a decent range, I may put the masters on hold. Also make sure you are adequately prepared to take the MCAT the first time and are consistently scoring in a range you want, minus a few points due to the unexpected on test day. I would not try to rush things and sabotage your GPA further and/or MCAT score. You've waited this long, what is an extra year to ensure you get what you want on the first attempt with minimal stress. Feel free to PM me if you do not want to publish specifics, I am an older nontrad as well.
