She basically told me that a high GPA would offset a low DAT score, that schools tend to give more leniency toward those with higher GPAs than those with lower ones. Any truth in this?

No. They don't prefer one over the other. A low DAT and high GPA could mean you're just not a great test taker when put under stress, but I don't buy that at all because if you have a high GPA you must have taken stressful exams and done well during university. A low GPA and high DAT could mean you simply went to a more challenging university and were better prepared for the DAT. One is standardized and the other isn't. That's why the DAT exists in the first place. Comparing a 4.0 at one school with a 3.5 at another isn't always apples to apples. Regardless of what many well-meaning individuals would lead you to believe, some schools are just more competitive than others.
