premed internships and shadowing

Since the fall is starting and i've come to realize that i have a little room in my schedule to do other stuff... i want to get an internship or shadowing position for a doctor.

My problem is that i don't really know where to start. How do you get the shadowing or internship position? For those of you pre-meds who have one, did you guys just get out a yellow book and call until someone said i could use an intern or something? Did you guys have connections? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks a bunch, you guys rule.
