What are your thoughts on completing your undergraduate online? Is there any medical students that have completed their undergraduate through an online program? Is there are premeds doing this right now? These are all questions I find interesting. I am in the U.S. military so I don't have the luxury of going to a school in person.

Take a look at: A video of a medical student talking about his online undergraduate experience.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks 🙂

I dont advise. I think it’s a bad idea.

Here's a thread with that discussion: Do I have a legitimate chance with my online degree?

Many schools do not accept on-line degrees or pre-reqs.
Many of those that will consider them do not prefer them.
Generally speaking, it is better to avoid online degrees and courses whenever possible.

Understood. It is simply not possible for me to avoid an online program. What do I do then? Thank you!

When would you be able to continue your education in person?
The occasional (peripheral) course could be overlooked even if the whole degree would put you at a significant disadvantage.

I will be in the military until 2023, I have a newborn baby and a wife. I wouldn't be able to the take courses in person until then. For this specific degree program, you have to go to the actual campus for 2 weeks to do the biochemistry and organic chemistry labs.

The key to an MD application is to maximize chances of success in the ways that are open to you.
If you have any other marginal aspects, an online degree is too risky to recommend.
Medical school will still be here.

Okay. It doesn't have to be easy, only possible. Thank you for the help. What are other ways I could maximize my application if I am doing an online program? Should I be specific in the reasoning?

We will already know that you chose this route because of the military.
There really is no other explanation.
Whether it will be sufficient is difficult to predict.

I finished my last two years of college online while on active duty. It did not hurt me in admissions. Being on active duty was enough of an explanation for the multiple schools I was accepted to, and I got a bunch of interviews. The only thing I would recommend is to complete your prereqs in person, whether that means taking them one at a time over a couple years or whatever. Many schools will not consider online science prereqs, so unless you want to only apply to the DO schools that do, you'd be best served to get those done in person. I know plenty of active duty folks who did, so it's possible.

@Dante Colon While I have not been accepted to medical school yet, I completed my degree online and have a 100% acceptance rate to the formalized career changer post-bacc programs I have applied to for my pre-requisite courses. I just wanted to chime in another 'sort of' successful anecdotal experience.
