Hi, I'm a CS major and pre-med. My college gave me one semester of biology credit for AP Biology. I have taken a semester of biology w/ lab in college. I know that most med schools require 1 year of bio w/lab. Does any one know which med schools don't accept the AP Bio credit or do accept, but prefer to accept students who have taken the year of bio in college? Should I take biochem and biochem lab so I'll have the one year of college biology w/ lab? I don't have much room extra classes that's why I don't want to take the biochem w/ lab unless it's absolutely required. If I were going to take biochem, then would it make a difference if I took it after I applied to the med schools (both those that do and don't accept AP Bio credit)? Please advise. Thanks.

You should take a bio class with lab, because AP credits often don't count. You can take it after you apply, as long as it's before you matriculate. However, I think Biochem usually counts as chemistry.

I would take to your advisor about it ASAP, but it is true that most schools do not count anything related to AP. The lab might not be a big deal, but you should take another bio class.

Whoa...I remember a previous post where we found it was only a few schools that did NOT take AP credits (Harvard, UPenn are some of the schools coming to mind). I will try and find that thread.

I think, very basic bio courses completed thru' AP are considered as long as you have taken advanced bio course with lab thru' formal class credit.

yeah, wasn't the whole deal that if you did complete some stype of advanced coursework, then most schools would take your AP

Dont worry about it. I took one semester of intro bio in college and used my AP credits for the 2nd semester. I didnt even think twice about it, and no school that I know of or at least that I applied to had any problem with it.

I meant that just taking an AP class generally does not suffice for the premed requirement. But virtually every school will accept the credit for an intro course provided that one takes an additional upper level course.

I have heard the same as Bonds756 has said.
I have 3 hrs of physiology and 3 hrs of lab, both grad level with letter grades. I am taking first two basic bio courses thru' AP ob a letter grade basis and I am confirmed that everything will appear on my transcript. I am also taking organic chem. thru' AP. I already have couple of chem courses at Undergrad level.
I hope med schools do not have any problem with it as I will also be applying for MSTP.

If anyone has been in the similar situation with any problem, pl share the info'.

best
