Preparing The School List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello All,

As we all know the new application cycle is coming upon us and with the help of the SDN community I would like to know my chances with some of my stats:

Volunteering: American Cancer Society, in hospital as well as Relay for life at my school~ 200 hrs

ECs: Fraternity President, Founder, Judicial Chair~ over 400 hrs
Tour Guide for my school~At least 400 hrs
Orientation Leader~80 hrs

Paid work: Student Worker at my school all year round
Summer Life guard (20 hrs a week)
Substitute Teacher (On call)

Shadowing: MD-400 hrs (basically every Friday for 3 yrs)
DO- 50 hrs (Hard to find a DO in my area willing to let me shadow, weird I know)

GPA: Undergrad-3.3 sGPA (with the retakes, without it is a 3.0), 3.3 cGPA
Grad- 3.8sGPA (did a combined program so I just did 30 credits of hard science thinking I would be ok with this but realized I needed a SMP)
SMP-3.8sGPA (only about 12 credits in though)

MCAT: Old One: 1st time-22
2nd time- 20
New One: 1st and only time-505
Nice job on that second MCAT. I think @Goro would agree that LUCOM would be #1 on your list.

I would rule out PCOM, KCU, CCOM, the coastal Touros and AZCOM. Best bet is with the newest schools.

Just as an FYI PCOM will look at the highest MCAT score.

"Is it ok to take the MCAT more the once?

You may take the MCATs more than once, but MCAT scores are only valid for 3 years from desired matriculation. We will take your highest valid score and look at that break down when we make our evaluation."

Would you say the newer MCAT is easier than the old one?

The New MCAT is not easier I just found the material to be more interesting, i.e less physics and more real life application. For example, Kinematics which really doesn't have much to do with being a doctor is almost nonexistent but the Biochem is interesting and most important so with more of that on the test it was good for me.

I would rule out PCOM, KCU, CCOM, the coastal Touros and AZCOM. Best bet is with the newest schools.

So for most schools I should be ok then? Touro I had already ruled out given that their MCATs are almost as high as MD schools which I clearly do not have. PCOM is a reach for me I love the school but I am a realist when it comes to applications and where to spend my money and time.

A 505 is great, translates to about a 28 on the old scale, huge improvement.
Apply to all the DO schools in your state (if there are any) and other programs except PCOM, Rowan, the coastal Touros, and both MWU campuses.
A 505 alone could get you in probably everywhere but that 20...

Thats my main concern honestly hah that 20 was due to ill preparation rushing to take the old one a second time

Don't worry. Most schools are forgiving. Just make sure to apply early. It will make a HUGE difference. And get a DO letter. It takes maybe a week or so of just following a doc and getting a letter. That will also help you a lot.
I also had a big MCAT jump and I got a ton of interviews on the DO side. The MD schools were significantly less forgiving even though the new score was above the average for accepted students for most schools.

Thank you for the words of encouragement, my MD letter is incredible but yes I am working on getting a DO letter and hopefully that will help with the app. I'm going to do the MD app just for the sake of doing it so there's no "what ifs" but with my mcat I'm fairly sure I will end up as a DO which I AM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT because a doctor is a doctor

If you live in Texas or Michigan, I wouldn't rule out an MD interview/acceptance.
If you're in CA, well, wellcome to the osteopathic family.
