So I will graduate in december with a degree in Geography. I have decided I want to go to dental school and am now looking for a post bac program to take the pre dental requirments. Has anyone here had experience, or done this. Specifically, would you recommend taking the classes course by course, or through an official program?

Hi there,

I graduated in 2004 with a degree in communications... worked in software development... and then in January decided to pursue dentistry. Since I needed to keep working, I decided to take the classes course by course at a small 4 year university (I live in New York City). I started w/ General Bio I and General Chem I and got A's in both, mostly attributed to the amount of time I was able to spend studying for each and my small class size. (The only science course I took in college was an astronomy course!)

I'm going to do the rest of the pre-reqs over the next year and apply next summer for the 2008 cycle. I looked into post-bacc programs at Columbia & Hunter College but I thought the courseload would be too much for me while working. I don't think there's any disadvantage to taking the classes at a university without a formal program. I also had many students in my class doing the same thing I was, and the pre-med advisor has been more than helpful to me.

Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!

I agree with uesider. I don't think you need to get into a degree program. I have my masters in computer science and working in Manhattan in the field but thinking about going to dental school in 2008. I'm taking my pre-req at night time and working full time.

Hey uesider, how old are you? I think we're both in the same situatioin. What school are you going to?

Thanks for your help. I am in the process of looking at the differences between course by course at the univ. i got my degree from or a post bas program somewhere else. I am leaning toward the post bac program only because I will not be working while in the program. Could you tell me some of the post bac program you looked into?

Hey sam26880,

I'm 24 right now, and will hopefully enter in 2008 when I'm 26. I'm signed up for Chem II, Physics I in the fall, then planning on O-Chem I and Physics II in the spring with DAT review (may push the Physics II til summer after the DAT though depending on time.) Then O-Chem II in the fall of 2007. I hope this plan will work 😉

I am taking pre-reqs at New York Institute of Technology here in NYC. I really like the small classes and the pre-med advisor has been great to me so far. I took one class at Baruch. The professor was great but the class was large.

I've shadowed students at NYU and UMDNJ and most said they took courses at places other than their home institution and had no problem.

Seahawks - I looked into the post-bacc programs at Columbia and Hunter College. The Hunter program seemed really intense, or the advisor was just really intimidating. The Columbia program seemed very structured, but since I haven't taken science in about 5 years, I was too nervous to start out taking freshmen courses with Columbia undergrads 🙂 I also had more flexibility when I designed my own course schedule. Good luck!

Hey Seahawks22-where abouts are you located, because I can suggest a few as well.
