Is presenting at ARVO as a medical student a big deal when applying for an ophtho residency? I was gonna post this in the ophtho subforums but figured I would get more responses here.

Good letters and involvement in research. Pubs are an obvious plus, but a good enough Step 1 will net some very good interviews.

Probably going to be 244-245 this year.

That's because they do the san francisco match early

260 opens doors in a lot of specialties. To match top ophtho programs you need to be a complete package with the scores research and advocates. To match any ophtho program you can have some deficiencies in one or two of those categories.

Depends on what you mean by "top" programs. Yes, to interview at Bascom Palmer, one would need substantive research. But that applies even to Internal Medicine programs. I can assure you that one can obtain interviews at very well-regarded programs with just a hint of research experience. Of course, the caveat is that one must be able to intelligently discuss the subject.

I agree, although it depends what kind of program you're applying to. Hugely academic place that prides itself on research it will matter more. Most of the places are clinically focused and will only care about involvement in research (and your passion for doing so) like the other poster above mentioned.
