Hello prevets, as you can see I'm a dental student @ UCSF and not a prevet. I long time ago I created a website to help pre-professionals, in my case, dentistry, as they applied to their respective schools. It's called PreDents.com. I am an official partner to SDN.

Many people have come to me and requested I create a similar website for their field. I already have numerous domain names with the "Pre----.com" formula but have not made them yet although intend to do so. Among the many I own is PreVets.com.

PreDents.com is really popular over there in the predental forums. All the data you see is entered by the applicants and is updated by them as the cycle goes on. All images are dynamically created as new info is updated.

Check out the website and let me know if you think it would be useful for prevets to have something similar.

Thanks

PDizzle

I would definitely use it , that website is really cool. 👍

I like that it breaks it down by school and then by pie chart per school. A few times I have wondered (and seen posted questions on SDN) about how many people get interviews and how many of those get in. I think that could be very useful.

I have to agree that I like the format of the site. It's very different from SDN, but I think it could be quite useful! I'm sure people on here would love to see a PreVets.com

Thanks for asking!

Yeah, I think it would be very useful. I know I'd join.

I too would love to see Prevets.com - However, I think it would suffer from not having a strong veterinary leadership to keep it going.

SDN is an incredible site, but it's mostly useful to prevets for the forum community. It is lacking in its pre-veterinary/veterinary information.

That is not SDN's fault, as lets face it, the pre-vet community is smaller then pre-med (and pre-dent?). For Pre-vets.com to have any lasting power, it would need to be managed by someone who is an expert in the field, and I am not sure there is a demand.

Now, for the preliminary data - like vet school breakdown, list of pre-req., In state vs. OOS, - Such would be a tremendous undertaking, as vet schools change their damn minds so often, but if that sort of data could be kept up to day, AND reliably so, then i think it would be an excellent hub of such information. Such a hub doesn't even exist with the AVMA - which is a shame.

Good luck to you if you choose to pursue it.

Count me as another 'that would be awesome' vote.

No Imagination: They use the ASDA guide for the information they have that is not generated by the users. All someone would have to do is enter the VMSAR information once every cycle - everything else is entered by applicants, all the pie charts and breakdowns and such.

So I don't understand your point...

I could see it being extremely useful, especially if you compiled all the pre-requisites, GRE criteria (Biology section or no?), admission statistics, etc all in one place.

Plus, you only have some 24(?) schools to work with, so it wouldn't take a lot of time.

I think it would be a great asset. I think people need to keep in mind that there is plenty of information out there regarding pre-reqs and GRE scores and such. Sure it may take some digging to find it but its there. And how helpful is it really to know that Ohio State requires a 2.8 GPA, 1000 GRE score and 80 hours of veterinary experience? The requirements for each school tell you nothing about how competitive an applicant you will be.

The advantage to a site like pre-dents.com is that it actually shows you the applicant data. This would be a better organized and more functional version of our "Successful applicants' thread.

I havn't seen your, "successful applicant" thread but the reason I made the site is because of the lack of a central place to report applicant stats and their progress through the admission cycle. On the predents forums, every third post was, "What are your stats?, where did you apply? When did you get an interview? Who accepted you? What school did you choose?". These are the questions applicants have and are freaked out about! So I created a place where everyone can enter all sorts of info, tabulate it and graphically display it.

As you can see in my avatar to the left, SDN programmed a direct link to my profile to predents.com so there is no more need to list all that info a hundred times. You just click that link, "Predents: Profile 1" and you can find everything you want about me regarding the app cycle.

Also, if I decide to do this, I will need your help because I know nothing of the process, unlike predents.com where after going through that admission hell, I was an expert on what people wanted to see.

Keep coming with your opinions. It's a lot of work so I just want to know if its worth it. I'm doing PrePharms.com, PreLaws.net and maybe PreMeds.net as well.

Before I made the decision to be pre-vet, I was considering dentistry. I decided that it wasn't really my thing, and moved over to the pre-vet area. Let me tell you, I was really jealous of the predent website, and would love to see something similar for vet med. I would be willing to help you with anything to get it up.

I think its a good idea although most of us are already used to sdn. But predents.com is very awesome. It would show us so much more and help out a lot of people. Like others said, having the updated information is what would make it useful which I agree. So i am all for prevets.com!! Give us suggestions on how we can help you do this if you plan on going through this.

It's not meant to replace SDN but be an adjunct to it.

I can't start work on it until middle/late March but the things I will need to know are the base requirements to get in. I already know that schools use GPA and the GRE. Is the GRE a specialized one or a standard verbal/math one? What's the central application you use? When can you first apply? Is there anything else that's mandatory for all/most schools? Things like that. Just by looking at predents.com you can figure out the equivalents.

Again, the more people that respond and say they want this, the better the chances I do it. I just don't want to spend a lot of time/money if no one uses it. 🙂😀

After this upcoming week of insanity is over, I would be willing to help you with the details that you need, PDizzle. If you want to send me a PM I'll give you my email address.

I vote yes. This type of thing is essentially what I came to SDN for. It would be great to see it all compiled and organized on one website. But it def only works if you get a good sample of applicants that input their data - so if you decide to do it, I'd say you really need to get the word out. Perhaps through the schools themselves?

If you need another person for specific help, I'm always here and willing. PM me.

Maybe it would be more effective if we sent out the link to our respective pre-vet clubs.

I was initialy concerned about the number of records and if it would be enough to have statistical meaning. If all the pre-vets here did their part to get the word out and helped promote the site, I think it would work. Predents currently has about 20% of the applicants as users recording their data. My goal is 50%. Since it grows bigger every cycle, I figure it will reach 50% in about 5 years or so :xf:

contacting the schools would also make a huge impact.

Keep posting here if you would use it! 😀

I would def. use it! Being a bit of a math dork myself, I love 😍 numbers and I am so jealous of the other pre-people and their statistics! I would find it incredibly useful and I think you'd have a large amount of grateful applicants.

I was toying with the idea of trying to put something like that together myself during the long haul from application submission to hearing from schools. I would be more than happy to help in any way possible!

I vote yes. I would definitely use it in conjunction with SDN.

It's really cool. I would use it if you included Canadian schools (there are 5).

Another 👍 from me!

YES!! I would definitely use it! 👍

That's a great idea. I don't have one, but I know a lot of schools do.

I was thinking along the lines of a link to the site on CVM's admissions pages. But I guess that's pretty unrealistic.

I agree, the pie charts are awesome!

If you get the site up before May I can make sure there's a link on the UF Pre-Vet Club website. Looks like it could be a really good resource.

Yes yes yes! That website looks amazing! It is so hard to find a place with information all compiled in one easy place.

A site like that would greatly benefit students that don't have a prevet program at their college and need one good place to find all the info. SDN has been a great help and it sounds like this would be icing on the cake🙂

Add me to the list of people who would love to see something like this 🙂
