thank you sir may i have another.....?

Huh? It says that freshmen can't rush. Doesn't mean that sophomores, juniors and seniors can't.

I love how Princeton is worried that frats encourage exclusivity.

True, but they do save face since elite types are probably the main people that know about truly exclusive groups. Frats seem elite to a normal person, but I imagine to a person "in the know" they're probably a joke.

The university gets the best of both worlds: appealing to normal students that are hesitant to be a part of an environment that separates people while actually keeping the old school segregation intact.

Damn I haven't slept in a while.

I don't see how this is a big deal...at my undergrad we didn't even have frats or sororities, and I thought it was fantastic.

My school has delayed recruitment for sororities and fraternities and I actually think its a great system. It forces students to spend at least a year to develop study skills and an identity outside of whatever greek organization they might later choose to join.

That way students actually are less segregated because they have a lot of friends outside of their sorority/fraternity. They also have more self-confidence than most freshmen because they have already been through a year of college on their own. Older students are less likely to be victims of hazing and/or fall into stupid partying situations because they aren't trying so hard to fit in like freshmen typically are.

Good move Princeton 👍

First of all, this is a ban on freshman rush and not on frats on a whole. Regardless, i'm betting that there are going to be some new secret societies popping up in the coming years...haha

at princeton, the frats don't really have a big presence on campus though (~20% of students are involved at max) and don't have frat houses or anything like that.

honestly, i feel like this was a really unneccesary move by shirley. the frats don't have any negative impact (at least that i've seen around campus), and basically function like any other club on campus (plus a bit of extra hazing 🙂)

regardless of this ban on freshman rush, the eating clubs are basically frats in and of themselves and those definitely aren't going anywhere.

I don't know, joining a fraternity at my undergrad was one of the better decisions I made. It helped me meet a group of people that shared similar interests and allowed me to seek a whole lot of the extracurriculars that have guided me towards my decision to pursue a career in medicine. Greek life isn't all bad folks.

I wouldn't trust a freshman in a frat either. Seems like a quick way to get big-headed.

👍👍👍 Best years of my life. People just hate what they weren't apart of and know nothing about.

This was beautifully written and completely true, although I think that it's better to simply ban 1st semester freshmen instead of freshmen altogether.

Also from the perspective of the organization, it's good to get people who already have an established role/connections on campus and who are a little more experienced, especially for event organization/philanthropy.

I thought it was fantastic how there was only one cool frat at UCSD and the rest are either honor/service societies or Asian societies.

This has little to do with applying to med school. Closing.
