Prisoner release in CA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
By a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court upheld a special, lower courts demand that California release approximately 32,000 prisoners over the next 2 years. This is approximately 1/3 of the prison population of the state. I know some anesthesiology posters live in the Golden State. Your thoughts?

I think the devil is in the details. I'd like to know how they're going to decide which prisoners to release. Hopefully they're all in Southern CA.

Likely low-level drug offenders (by low-level I mean possession, not distribution). I remember reading somewhere that a substantial portion of inmates in CA are drug offenders. I highly doubt they'd be releasing violent offenders, although it is California...they tend to defy all logic.

Just another example of credit card governing beginning to come apart at the seams. Again, just like Wisconsin, you are seeing barely the tip of the iceberg. And it's a Titanic-sinking sized iceberg.

California has really screwed themselves badly over the years. I gave up my license there when I realized I'd never return to that mess.

California is a disgrace. It is such a shame that one of the most plentiful states in the country is going to default pretty soon. I can't wait until they start asking the rest of American for a bailout.

This.

And, I was just listening to Erwin Chimerinski, founding dean of UC Irvine's School of Law, on the radio discussing the issue. It's disgusting to me what intelligent, educated people can and will say in the name of idealism.

He was complaining that, under the 3 strikes laws, many people are locked up for silly crimes like stealing a pizza, petty theft, etc. HOWEVER, what he fails to mention is that these people -- who may be candidates for release -- had to commit 2 serious / violent felonies before the 3rd strike kicked in, AND the judge has judicial discretion on whether or not to enforce!

I think California is a progressive state with ALOTTA POTENTIAL.

Their economics have been riddled away by several things, one notable being their healthcare system being inundated with illegal aliens who don't pay taxes who receive free health care.👎

They've got 1 budding industry tho:

WEED.

ACCOLADES to California for their FORESIGHT.

I write this as I sip on a crystal filled wine glass which contains a CAYMUS CABERNET,one of the great wines available to us LEGALLY.

Yet,

Alcohol is legal. I'm within the law sipping on a moeity which can cause significant morbidity and possibly death if abused. Alcohol if used unwisely causes one to become angry, disruptive, and drive 90 miles an hour.

WEED on the other hand makes one breed PEACE, LOVE AND HAPPINESS, and drive FIFTEEN miles an hour.

Alcohol-induced driving deaths are commonplace in our society.

Weed induced driving deaths are almost unheard of since it's REALLY hard to kill someone when you're driving 15 miles an hour.

I moonlighted extensively in an ER when I was an anesthesia resident for extra money.

I saw COUNTLESS alcohol-related injuries/morbidities.

I NEVER saw a marijuana induced morbidity/injury. Not saying it can't happen, just saying alcohol verses weed = apples verses oranges.....and

THE BAD ONE IS LEGAL

THE GOOD ONE IS ILLEGAL.

And the GATEWAY DRUG PROPAGANDA ABOUT WEED?

No, dude. That's a buncha BULL$%IT.

So I TIP MY HAT to California for their progressive stance in that arena.

I encourage them to heighten their stance on illegal aliens considering how much that sucks out of the system.

In summary, if I were GOVERNATOR, (no...absolutely NO WAY I would've schtooped that fugly housekeeper, btw)

1) LEGALIZE WEED. TAX IT.

2) TIGHTEN UP ON ILLEGAL ALIEN INFILTRATION

No applause needed. Thank you.

I'll be signing shirts May 30th at The Coronado.

I think many migrants although not paying taxes (even if they wanted to their annual revenue would be to low to be taxed), contribute a lot to the californian economy working jobs that have become to hard for the average american: farming, construction etc...

If you look into it i think it has been proven that they generate more than they cost although i still think some regulation should to take place to ensure that migrants can get jobs and be productive.

A little persepctive is in order here.

Yes, their debt is higher than most, but on a per capita basis, it's no worse than anyone else's. Yes, they have a high state income tax, but, again, just slightly higher than #2. Yes, they have a larger dependent class, in the form of unionized government workers with oversized pensions and benefits. But all this with a larger GDP than any other state. I haven't lived here all that long, and I'm sure there are aspects to this that I haven't considered, but I'm not sure that we're all that much worse off than anyone else.
