On Pritzker's website, it says that they award 8 million dollars of merit scholarships to each class. That would be enough to waive tuition for 50 students out of each class of ~100. Is that true? Is a substantial portion of Pritzker's class receiving full merit scholarships each year?

That depends.. See here:

http://pritzker.bsd.uchicago.edu/admissions/financialaid/budget.shtml

So total tuition is: $163,636 (Add the first row)
Total projected expenditures are: $262,316

If merit scholarship only includes tuition, then 48.889 people get a full ride, that is roughly 1/2 of the class.

If the scholarship includes a living stipend sort of package, you could pay the projected cost of 30.5 students, which is just under 1/3 of the class.

I read somewhere that 2/3 of the students at Pritzker get scholarship, so this seems to support that. Of course, $1000 a year is scholarship. Who know how they distribute the cash?

Any Pritzker students want to weigh in here?

if thats true then thats pretty amazing. most schools dont have that high a proportion of students on full merit.

I'm sure they just end up dishing out smaller scholarships to most people, and save some for a handful of full rides. It would be big news if half their incoming class got full rides lol.

I remember reading somewhere that they give out 10-12 full tuition scholarships per year.

If they only give out 10-12 full scholarships per year, then they must give out an awful lot of >50% tuition scholarships to reach 8 million dollars. Oh well... I'm not complaining.

Looks like I picked the wrong school to get rejected from

Pritzker has fuzzy lines between need and merit scholarships so I would not be surprised if a lot of that fund went to "need," not like we're all super rich to begin with. They do give out a lot of 50% or less off of tuition scholarships, in chunks like $15k/yr, 30k/yr, etc. I think they offer a dozen to 15 to 20-ish full tuition scholarships. I got the full tuition last year after my initial $30k/yr award (I think someone smarter than me turned them down) but ended up elsewhere. Pritzker is really nice about financial aid and one great thing is that their awards are locked in for all 4 years. If you need more, don't be afraid to ask, as they are super-aware about the cost of medical education and student debt...ironic that they have such super-high graduating debt when you consider how nice (and sometimes generous) the aid office is. Best of luck.

I was very fortunate to get a fullride there this year. I know someone else who interviewed with me also did.

The fullride includes tuition only. That is their biggest scholarship.

This year meaning you are an M1 right now? Or you will be in August of 08? Have they given out scholarship this year? I have not heard about any financial aid.

Their stats say 85% of people get grants (in addition to loans), so yeah, I think they have a lot of money to spread around!
