How much do prestigious merit-based scholarships help residency applications?

For example, the Geffen at UCLA or the Dean’s Scholarship at UMich. Would receiving one of those scholarships help a residency applicant in and of themselves? Or would any potential benefit be a result of the boost those scholarships would give to an applicant’s network?

I don’t know what these scholarships are for and they don’t tell me that you’re trainable, brighter than average, high potential, etc.

It may indicate a school's commitment to your career development and thus open some doors for you to network/get involved in high impact research. But it'll ultimately be on you to take advantage of it.
