Private vs. Public // In-state vs. Out-of-state

I have not received acceptance anywhere...but the financial aspect is definitely on my mind. I have noticed that some private school's programs are AMAZING....and obviously cost more. However, there is also the side of me that wants to save money and be smart about where I go. I know that as a person that loves diversity, different cultures and nationalities...that I would feel more comfortable, learn more, and thrive more at a school that is in a bigger city...most likely out of state.

Any thoughts or advice?

I'd save money and go to an instate public institution if possible. Future you will thank yourself if you come out with 50k in loans vs 100k, but ultimately its up to you.

I'm in the same boat as you. There are some great out of state programs that I've applied to, and I'd love to go live somewhere new. However one of the in state schools is less than half the cost...if I get into both, I'm going to have to make myself go to the instate school. It's just not worth the payments down the road

This is definitely a hard decision. I turned down my top choice school too to go instate. The cost savings is massive. Although sometimes I think I would have appreciated my #1 school in terms of student diversity, student support and a few other curriculum pieces (including more clinical time), when I get out of school my lifestyle will be different because I won't be drowning in debt. The way I see it, I figure I will go on to do a residency or specialize anyway so DPT school is really just the broad basics anyway.

I applied out of state because some schools were cheaper than the average tuition in California. It was definitely a great decision, and it's really cool to live on the East Coast for a change! I definitely turned down the more expensive schools, because a LOT of out-of-state schools charge more tuition, or they're private and usually expensive.

UNLV is one of the most diverse universities in the country, and all students pay in-state tuition after the first year.

Thank you. I am a student at Ohio University and have an interview with OU this weekend, but I am craving a change in culture. University of Miami and University of Wisconsin-Madison seem to offer a very awesome culture of diversity, and they are both well-ranked schools. Does anyone know if you can get in-state tuition after the first year at UW-Madison?

You need to look at the residency and tuition laws for each state. Some states allow that, and others are much more strict. Maryland specifically states that you can't become a resident if it's clear that you moved here just for school, so I'm stuck paying out-of-state tuition for all 3 years.
