I'm a family medicine resident! Or at least I will be in a few months...

In anticipation, my curiosity ventured here: which professional organizations do most FM physicians join? The first ones that come to mind are AAFP and AMA.

Also, which journals do most FM physicians subscribe to? (Preferably the ones that are actually read and not just protecting coffee table surfaces).

Cheers, looking forward to some good discussions with you all.

i asked the same thing in another post at this forum...

awaiting suggestions!

I'm a member of the AAFP and my state chapter as well as a couple of interest specific groups. I was a member of the AMA as a student, but I'm not a big fan now. I think AAFP membership is beneficial, but many of those benefits are available to non members. I think my state chapter is the most practical of all the organizations. None are of great benefit if you are not at least minimally involved.

I will also be a FM Resident in July and I have already begun my membership at the AAFP. They always had a few good articles that I read in med school. The AAFP enjoys a very large rate of membership among physicians and residents - among the highest. Although they are still a huge organization, the AMA, is not what it used to be and only has about 50% of physicians as members.

Think about getting a subscription to "Journal Watch". It is well worth the $$ and you can get CME credit for it. It's something that you can read quickly and get some good info without having to read several different journals.
