Cap is being put on professional school student loans if the BBB passes and I am sure it will. Now how do you cover the gap between the cap and cost of tuition? Parents will be forced to sign up with 250K+ loans that will show up on their credit report. In a world of decreasing incomes in dentistry and now personal loans to cover the cost of tuition......what is everyone thinking or the is the predent doc not thinking about the future, just get me in!!! SMH

I don’t think some predatory schools will survive. Can’t say I feel bad for them at all.

These next few years will be very very interesting for dental schools. We don't really know the full ramifications of the bill yet. Ideally, Big Hoss will be correct and the schools that are 500k+ close down.

I have to see if the forums run by the DAT prep communities are blowing up. I hesitate to check reddit. Unless they all are inheriting major crypto hauling to cover expenses.

There is a light discussion in Topics. I think some of the other subforums also have discussions. In general, we're not big fans of the impact on financial aid, especially those who already started (as I surmise). Podiatry.

amazing all respondents are dentists... no predents have an opinion? this says a lot.
Starting dental school this fall. It's kinda weird to see the ladder pulled up behind me.

Given my positions I really don't want to come off as ungrateful for just making it, but this is certainly something that's a long time coming. 600k debt with ~9%? It is insane. Someone had to put their foot down sooner or later. I don't even think most dentists pay back their loans in full, they use Tax bomb or some other strategies so they don't have to pay back in full- and everyone is surprised this is collapsing?

Personally, I wouldve given a higher cap for the next cycle of students, and toggle down the cap by X amount every following year in an attempt to give students more of a heads up to slow down the train instead of crashing it.
Edit: and in that sense I do think it's unfair, that these kids invested so much money and time into this field but aren't afforded at least a single years heads up to pivot.

If you want someone to be really pissed at- point your fingers to boomers who said "wouldn't it be nice if more people were educated" and now decades later millennials and zoomers ARE educated, they're just educated AND poor. Like, what in God's name am I supposed to do with a bach in bio? Every field that's somewhat applicable requires more education or specific avenues.

reddit pre-dental has been pretty busy discussing the topics relating to the BBB, lots of applicants are worried or starting to give-up and thinking of moving to a different career, definitely a mixed bag of varying opinions presented

Starting my third year of dental school. Really wanted to stay under $[emoji[emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]]]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]k and I think I should be on track to achieve that. I met with a pre-debt advisor before starting dental school and that shed a lot of light on what repayment looks like for various scenarios. However, I’m not sure I would go to dental school if I had to take out private loans with a high interest rate. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s worth it to specialize if I have to take out private loans.

I’m glad he thinks the American taxpayer should just write a blank check and be on the hook for anyone who wants to attend these insanely expensive schools. Maybe he should ask how these schools become so expensive in the first place. I can assure him that if free market forces had been in place we wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with. Seriously, how many private lenders would be lining up to give some 22 year-old an unsecured $750,000 loan to attend USC or NYU, all to end up with a job paying $150,000? He can thank government intervention for the high cost of education today.

Didn’t have time to fully watch the first one, but I’ll say that guy in the second one has no business taking out $500,000+ to pay for dental school. Deep down inside he knows that too. More predents will also wake up to that fact, and that’s why dental schools are in serious trouble.

I feel for him. Sadly, our education system is such an utter joke that he was put in a terrible situation if he wanted to become a dentist. Blame the schools for jacking up tuition and government for giving unlimited loans. He seems like a smart kid, and i'm sure he'll be fine pursuing something else. Neither he, nor anyone else, should not go into dentistry for 400k+. With that said, at least with the BBB, the charade is finally over.

If one can find a way to attend dental school for $200k in student loans debt (through a combination of family help and scholarships), would you guys advise that dental school is worth it in this case? Asking for a friend here.

How much is their family going to blow? Are they inclined to run a business?
